Early Times Report
srinagar, Jun 19: The three year old coalition rule in the state came to an end today after Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) severed ties with its coalition partner Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and pulled out of the coalition.
The decision to pull out of the government came after a meeting of BJP ministers and leaders of the state with the party President Amit Shah at New Delhi. The BJP high command had summoned the party leaders including the ministers to the union capital yesterday in the evening.
Following BJP's pullout from the coalition government chief minister submitted her resignation to Governor Narendra Nath Vohra. National Conference Vice President and leader of opposition Omar Abdullah also called on the governor and told him that his party would not support any group in the formation of next government in the state.
Addressing a press conference at New Delhi, BJP General Secretary, Ram Madhav said that the overall situation emanating in Jammu & Kashmir was discussed threadbare during the meeting with the party leaders. He said that there was a consensus that given the present situation it is difficult to continue the coalition with PDP in the state.
"It has become untenable for the BJP to continue the alliance government in Jammu & Kashmir. Under such circumstances, the BJP was left with no other option, but to pull out of the alliance," said Madhav. He said that terrorism has spread like anything in the state and at the same time radicalization has spread its roots in the Kashmir valley.
'Keeping in mind that Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India and in order to control the prevailing situation in the state, we have decided that the reins of power in the state is handed over to the governor," Madhav said. He said there was a growing sense of discrimination within the Jammu and Ladakh two regions of the state.
The BJP General Secretary said the decision was taken after consulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as party president. He denied that the decision was taken because the BJP was losing ground adding that the party is doing a lot of good work in the state.
In a statement the BJP accused the state government of showing little interest in improving the state's law and order condition. The statement said that state government has not been effective in addressing the core issues of the state. The security scenario has deteriorated causing serious concern about the protection of basic fundamental rights of life, free speech etc.
"Daylight murder of a respected editor like Shujat Bukhari in the heart of Srinagar city is an indicator to the deterioration of the situation and the extent of radicalization," the statement said.
Political analysts believe that BJP played a 'master stroke' by pulling out of coalition government in the state. They said that before PDP could take a decision about the fate of coalition following denial of Home Ministry to extend ceasefire in Jammu & Kashmir the BJP decided to end its coalition.
"It was expected that PDP would come out of the government following Government of India's decision not to extend ceasefire in Jammu & Kashmir. However, the top brass of BJP played smartly and ended the coalition with PDP. This may come to their advantage in the next year's Lok Sabha elections and assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir," said the political analysts.
