Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 18: The previous state governments did not leave any stone unturned in making claims that it is taking more than appropriate measures for rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits who left the valley and settled down in many parts of the country.
With every passing day disturbing trends are emerging while suggesting that the picture is bleak and not rosy with regard to Kashmiri Pandits and their properties in the valley. Most of the Kashmiri Pandits whose houses were burnt at the onset of militancy in the valley are yet to receive compensation from the government.
Sources told Early Times that these families have been paid a part of their ex-gratia relief in this regard with the balance amount remaining unpaid. They said that although thousands of houses of Kashmiri Pandits have been encroached by the people having vested interests no action whatsoever has been taken to retrieve the same.
"In addition to the houses thousands of kanals of agricultural and horticultural land of the Kashmiri Pandits have been pounced upon by the greedy people. Despite tall claims successive governments have failed to do the needful in this regard and as such members of Kashmiri Pandit community continue to suffer," said sources.
Sources said that thousands of youth of Kashmiri Pandit community have crossed the age of employment and as such are facing huge economic as well as social problems along with their respective families. They said that packages announced in this regard by the state and central governments have failed to do justice.
"We are seeing that the governments provide scholarships to the children belonging to certain under privileged categories. Same parameters should be applied for the children of Kashmiri Pandit families as they suffered a lot due to the exodus from the valley. There is no such provision in the state and central budgets," said sources.
Sources said that members of this community are suffering losses of hundreds of crores on account of crops, fruits, dry fruits and vegetables. They said that over the years the people at helm have paid no attention whatsoever to this glaring problem with the members of the community being pushed to the wall.
"The members of Kashmiri Pandit community putting up at Jagti are up against many odds. As and when there are rains the water gets collected in the rooms since there are leakages in the roof. At the same time there is no fresh water at the residential quarters at this place with the people being supplied impure and unfiltered water," said sources.
Sources said that the 'D' class contractors among the Kashmiri Pandit community are denied contracts and these are given to the contractors who don't belong to this community. They said that there is disillusionment among the members of this community especially the youth since they have no means of livelihood.
