Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 4: Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander, Naveed Jatt gave a slip to police and security forces while as his five associates were killed in an encounter in the Kiloora village in South Kashmir's Shopian district in the morning today.
Reports said that Naveed and some militants were encircled by police and security forces after they received inputs that around 10 militants are hiding in the Kiloora village in Shopian. The police and security forces laid a siege around the house in which the Lashkar commander was hiding along with some of his accomplices. As the militants found that they have been trapped they resorted to indiscriminate firing on police and security forces thus leading to a full-fledged encounter between the two sides. While some of the militants engaged in a gun battle with police and security forces some others including Naveed managed to flee from the encounter site. The encounter lasted for few hours and it ended with the killing of five militants. The slain militants owed their allegiance to LeT. They were identified as Arshad Ahmad of Ganowpora- Balpora, Shopian, Waqar Ahmad Sheikh of Malikgund-Shopian, Aijaz Ahmad Paul of Lousdanew-Shopian, Umar Malik of Malikgund-Shopian and Arif Ahmad of Yannar-Pahalgam.
Reports said that clashes broke out between groups of people and police at many places in Shopian and Pulwama district as the news about the killing of five militants broke out. Some of the protesters tried to disrupt the cordon and search operation at Kiloora village, but the same was foiled by police and security forces.
In the Ganowpora village of Shopian a civilian was killed and two others injured after security forces opened fire on protesters who pelted them with stones. Youth hurled stones on army men soon after the funeral prayers of slain militant Arshad Ahmad. The deceased youth, aged around 24, was identified as Bilal Ahmad Khan. At least nine injured civilians were referred to Srinagar for treatment.
Later in the day Naveed along with some other masked militants appeared in the Malikgund village and offered gun salute to the two militants of the village who were killed in the encounter. The Lashkar commander fired many shots in air with the same resonating to a great distance.
A police spokesman said that in Kiloora area of District Shopian, security forces yesterday night jointly launched searches after it was able to track a group of militants in the area. During the search militants hiding inside a house fired on the search party. The fire was retaliated thereby establishing contact with the militants leading to an encounter.
"In the ensuing encounter, five militants were killed. Initially it came across that one civilian had lost his life in cross firing but subsequent investigation confirmed that no such civilian death had occurred and reports pertaining to the civilian death were inaccurate. Pertinently the encounter later took place in an open area as the hiding militants, taking advantage of darkness came out of the house and fired indiscriminately on security forces," said the spokesman. The spokesman said that arms and ammunition were also seized from the site of encounter. Police has registered a case and initiated investigation into the matter.
