Reasi, Aug 20: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) organized awareness programme on Parthenium hysterophorus (Congress grass) management at Govt. Middle School, Bhabber of Reasi district in which 55 school children and two school teachers participated. The programme was organized under the able guidance of Associate Director Extension (ADE) and I/C KVKs of SKUAST-J, Dr. R.K. Arora. The programme was initiated by Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal. He gave a detail account on Integrated Parthenium Management and said that the Parthenium hysterophorus (congress grass) is a poisonous, pernicious, problematic, allergic, aggressive and deadly weed which is posing a serious threat to human beings, livestock, environment and biodiversity. He added that the weed has become a menace for all of us and joint efforts are needed to eradicate it by applying the different methods. He stressed on manual uprooting the weed by wearing the gloves. He said that the application of herbicides like glyphosate (1-1.5%) for total vegetation control specially in the waste land or metribuzin (0.3-0.5%) if grasses are to be saved in non-agricultural land are considered effective in preventing this weed spread. Alaclor (2.0kg a.i) can be used as a pre-emergence weedicide to control Parthenium in soybean, rajmash, banana and tomato crop.
