PDP leader appeases militants while 4 cops are martyred
'Soft separatism' is back

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 29: This cannot get more bizarre than this. A senior Peoples Democratic Party leader Engineer Nazir Ahmed Itoo is out to grab the headlines and appease the militants in Kashmir.
Itoo in a statement issued on Wednesday strongly condemned the attack on the family members and houses of militants in South Kashmir. "What is the fault of the houses and family members of militants? You have to confront militants and not target their family members. Are we here to give a flip to militancy or to eradicate it? This is an important question that authorities need to answer," Itoo said in the statement
What he tried to undermine in an outright manner was the fact that on the day when he issued such an appeasing statement for the militants, a group of militants gunned down four policemen in broad day light in south Kashmir's Shopian district.
As per the reports, a group of policemen escort party of the DSP headquarters Shopian arrived in Arhama area of the district to repair a vehicle, when militants targeted them. Sources added that militants resorted to indiscriminate firing killing three policemen on spot while fourth one succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
The slain cops have been identified as Constable Ishfaq Ahmed Mir son of Abdul Aziz Mir of Watergam Dangiwacha, Constable Muhammad Iqbal Mir son of Abdul Rehman Mir a resident of Hardu Chanam Rohama, Constable Javaid Ahmed Bhat son of Nazir Ahmed Bhat of Panzinara Sumbal and SPO Adil Manzoor Bhat son of Manzoor Ahmed, a resident of Zawoora Shopian.
Militants also managed to snatch three AK-47 rifles from the slain policemen. The incident created panic in the area while majority of the people mostly youth fled from the village. The surrounding areas were cordoned off shortly after the incident; however, no arrests were made.
This is the second deadly attack on cops in South Kashmir. On June 16, six policemen including Station House Officer were killed when militants attacked their vehicle near Tajwar area of Achabal in South Kashmir's Anantnag district.
However, there wasn't a single word mentioned about the slain police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, rather this political leader came all out in support of the militants to grab headlines.
"This is bizarre and unnatural on the part of the PDP leader to issue such a statement when a deadly attack was carried out against the security forces. He should have come out to condemn such attack but he preferred to side with the militants and tried to project the security forces as ruthless villains. He should explain on which side he is and why he has been adopting double standards on the issue," says a political functionary.
Meanwhile, more ironic was that the PDP leader in question didn't bother to highlight the sufferings incurred by the security personnel while combating the highly radicalised militancy in Kashmir. What remains to be seen is whether Yatoo's statement will be seconded by his party or his rebutted at the very onset.
