In a first, NSG commandos deployed outside Srinagar, massive anti-terror drill on cards
9/7/2018 10:25:40 PM
Agencies
New Delhi, Sept 7: In a first, the National Security Guard (NSG) commandos will be deployed outside Srinagar in a bid to enhance the anti-terror operations in the Valley. While a decision in this regard was taken several months ago, it was only on Thursday that the officers and men of the NSG came on the ground.
According to agencies sources, this is the first time that such a deployment is being carried out in the Valley.
As of Thursday, several hundred men and officers of the NSG were deployed outside Srinagar. It is reliably learnt that the NSG- which specialises in anti-terror operations, will now become a part of the existing counter-terror grill in Jammu and Kashmir. Secondly, and more importantly, the force will also be imparting training to the existing security forces such as the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), on what the guards specialise in.
The security scenario in the Valley has undergone a change ever since the fall of the Mehbooba Mufti government earlier this year.
The state is currently under the Governor's rule and the Home Ministry took a decision to deploy NSG in the valley with a motive to step up the counter-terror operations in the state.
The move is likely to have been prompted by an increase in the number of skirmishes between militants and security personnel. In fact, a number of security men belonging to the Indian Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police have lost lives during encounters with militants in the Valley.
