5 militants killed in two separate encounters in north Kashmir

BARAMULLA, Sept 13: Five militants were killed today in twin districts of north Kashmir, after two foreign militants of JeM outfit were neutralized in Sopore town and three infiltrators got killed in Keran sector.
A top police official while talking to early times said that a joint team of army's 22RR, SOG and CRPF laid a siege in the area following specific information about the presence of some militants late last night.
He said that the gunfight broke out after the hiding militants lobbed a grenade and fired live ammunition on the search party.
Two militants of Jash-e Mohammad (JeM) were killed today afternoon in an encounter that erupted between militants and security forces in Taliyan Mohalla of Armpora Sopore, said police official.
He said that soon after the encounter the search parties retrieved the bodies of the militants.
Police on Thursday issued a statement in which they said that in Checkipora area of Sheikhpora Sopore today, Police and security forces jointly launched a search operation based on credible inputs about the presence of militants in the area.
Statement said that during the searches, militants fired on the search party. Initially, civilians were evacuated from the encounter site to the safer areas before engaging the militants in an encounter.
"In the ensuing encounter, two militants were eliminated. Some arms, ammunition and incriminating material were recovered from the site of the encounter, said statement.
It said that, from the incriminating material recovered from the encounter site, the killed militants have been identified as foreigners from Pakistan namely Ali alias Athar and Zia-ur-Rehman. They have affiliated with proscribed militant outfit JeM.
Ali was one of the important commanders of JeM and was active since 2014. He was the mastermind of the Sopore IED blast in which four policemen were killed. Besides, both of them were involved in attacks on security force establishments and civilian.
Police have registered a case in this regard and the investigation has been initiated in the instant matter.
Meanwhile a top army official from Kupwara district said that three militants were killed today in an ongoing encounter along the Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Thursday.
The offical said that soldiers of 3 JAK Rifles manning the fence at Balbir post near Datgali in Keran intercepted a group of militants at around 10:40 am today which resulted into an encounter.
An army officer said that the alert troops challenged the movement of a group of infiltrators triggering off a gunfight.
In the ensuing gunfight, three infiltrators have been killed, adding the bodies of the militants are lying close to the LoC and are yet to be retrieved, the official said.
