How Long India will shield by blaming Pakistan? Enough is enough!

Ravinder Jalali

Enough is enough.
Again the terrorists have struck in valley by abducting and killing SPO and policemen. In Shopian district of Kashmir terrorists of Hizbul Mujahedeen and Lashkar-e-Toiba kidnapped the police personals and shot them dead at point blank range across the river despite being chased and appealed by the local residents to release these police personals and not to harm them. Again the routine condemnation from all quarters and statements like "Guilty will be punished as per the law of land" were heard coming from leaders and ex ministers across the state and from across the Nation. Yes, what else can be done other than the condemnation? It does not cost anything to these leaders and politicians. Moreover the victims of terrorist violence are not near and dear ones of these politicians and leaders. If their own kith and kin will be the victim of terrorist violence then things and the response from the Govt. will be totally different. They do not feel the pain and agony of the widows, children and parents of victims of terrorists.
It is not for the first time such killings took place. Almost every week some policemen or security person is martyred and not only martyred but body mutilated and dismembered. In contrast when terrorist is killed, so many mainstream and separatists including self styled Human Right champions raise their voice and condemn the killings of militants but remains mute spectator for the victims of terrorists.
It was a welcome step on the part of New Delhi to cancel foreign level talks with Pakistan in New York following the abduction and killing of three J&K Police personnel. Any talks with Pakistan will be meaningless as the neighbour would not mend its ways. India on Thursday accepted Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's suggestion that the foreign ministers of the two countries can meet on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly being held shortly. After the "deeply disturbing" events that took place since Thursday, these were the "brutal killings of our security personnel by Pakistan-based terrorist and the recent release of a 20 postage stamps by Pakistan glorifying a terrorist and terrorism, the talks have been cancelled.
One of the cheapest and readily available excuses is to squarely blame Pakistan for these acts. Even sometime the allegations are levelled even before a slightest thought process takes place. We do not deny the involvement of Pakistan in the terrorist activities in J&K or far that matter throughout India but the question is can Govt. absolve of its responsibility by simply blaming Pakistan. Condemnations and blaming Pakistan is so frequent and rapid that even the Pakistan may not be taking any cognisance of it. Such statements only lower the morale of security forces that are fighting a proxy war.
People should remember that only recently Aurangzeb a soldier was also martyred and many others but see the reaction of his father and brother on the martyrdom. Suppose for the sake of argument or for that matter, yes it is Pakistan who is sponsoring terrorism in J&K, How does it matter. It is their business and they are doing their duty. This is not the first incident and is not going to be the last. Beginning of the Year 2016, seven defence personals sacrificed their lives while neutralising the terrorists who had crossed the border from Pakistan to attack an important defence installation at AFS, Pathankot. Some time before we faced same situation when terrorists struck in Gurdaspur area of Punjab. Terrorists have proved that they can strike at their will and convenience. How long we continue to blame Pakistan for our failures? We can no longer brush aside by simply blaming Pakistan and escape responsibility. The Govt. can not absolve itself of its responsibility. Our security persons are recruited to defend our country by killing the enemy but not getting killed themselves at the hands of our enemy and that too in home soil. Are we not fully equipped? We need to have details analysis of the handling of the crisis. I find it strange to hear on media channels that such and such person have attained martyrdom. It is a mere consolation rather self gratification and a cruel joke with the family members of deceased.
On one hand we accept and is also a fact that Pakistan is a terror state and then accepts friendly relations from Pakistan is just like blowing hot and cold through the same breath. The action needs to be taken at our end against Pakistan. We can not expect them to be silent. We go on telling the world that Pakistan is sponsoring terrorism but fails at our end to take the required measures.
The problem is more at our home rather than from Pakistan. Why we fail to act? The morale of security forces is low. I feels disturbed when a top Cop of a force says that our Jawans are exercising maximum restraint. In recent stone pelting incidents it was the security forces who were the target of the entire Govt. They were concerned about those people who are attacking these forces with stones, grenades and petrol bombs and had no concern for thousands of their own forces. Is this the professionalism? When the forces will be attacked by the terrorists, how they will respond.
We have to come out of denial mode. We have been denying the presence of ISIS in J&K despite the hoisting of ISIS flags and slogans in their favour till one of the terrorists who was killed was ISIS recruit. Only yesterday the flag and banner of Hezbollah, a dreaded terrorist organisation from Libya, Lebanon and Palestine was also found in Srinagar. People were raising slogans in their favour, but we will still not accept their presence, unless they carry out attack. Only then we will accept and act. We also act in defensive manner and not in pro-active measure or as an offensive. We wait and watch and when we are at the receiving end, we start defending and that is the reason we suffer and are the losers, Otherwise Pakistan is no match to us and is dictating and provoking. Instead of blaming Pakistan we must do some home work to find the reasons for our failures in containing terrorism. Our security persons are not fully equipped to deal with such type of attacks. We are not acting against terror but only reacting in a defensive manner. We believe in defence system and our enemy is taking advantage of it. The core issue is how the government, either State or Central, is to handle with an individual or institution, who do not accept the sovereignty of nation and challenges its integrity. It is high time for Govt. to wake up to the ground realities, stop blaming Pakistan and set the home in order as it seems that real problem is at Home and we are searching some where else.
