Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 18: In a significant order a Division Bench of the State High Court comprising Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Sindhu Sharma has directed the J&K State Pollution Control Board to initiate appropriate action against 10 Slaughter Houses operating in Jammu Region without the consent of the Pollution Control Board. The Division Bench in the open court further directed that if the rules permit then the process for closing the slaughter houses be also initiated and a status report in this regard be filed by the J&K Pollution Control Board within a period of three weeks from today.
These court directions were passed by the Division Bench in a much publicized Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an NGO 'SAVE' (Save Animal Value Environment) through its Chairperson Devinder Kaur Madaan alias Rumpy Madaan seeking closure of un-regulated and un-registered/un-licensed slaughter houses/meat shops in the State of Jammu and Kashmir including Jammu/ Srinagar Cities. The PIL further seeks directions to the State of Jammu and Kashmir/ JMC/SMC to establish modern slaughter houses in both capital cities outside the municipal limits and the slaughter houses already existing in the various Districts/Tehsil Headquarters be modernized.
Advocates appearing for the petitioner drew the attention of the Division Bench to the status report filed by Brij Mohan Sharma (IFS) Member Secretary J&K State Pollution Control Board wherein it was categorically submitted that out of 13 slaughter houses running in Jammu Region only 3 are consented by the Pollution Control Board while as one case is in process and others are operational without consent of the Pollution Control Board.
Looking into the importance of the matter the Division Bench directed the Registry to re-notify this PIL on November, 14, 2018.
