JAMMU, Oct 23: In a Public Interest Litigation seeking the protection of rights of transgender people; their social, political and economic inclusion in society and reservations in government jobs and educational institutions, a Division Bench of State High Court comprising Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Alok Aradhe ordered Commissioner, Social Welfare Department (SWD), to go through the schemes which are in vogue in different parts of the country for the benefit of transgenders and examine the workability of the said schemes in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. DB also directed Commissioner, SWD to place a report regarding the workability of the said schemes in the State before this court within a period of four weeks from today. When the PIL came-up for hearing, Asif Ahmad Bhat, AAG, submitted that objections to the policy which was under finalization before the Department of Social Welfare were received from the petitioners and others and that the same is at advance stage of finalization. DB after hearing AAG, directed that the policy as framed be positively placed before this Court within four weeks. During the course of hearing AAG further submitted that the Government of Jammu & Kashmir has no scheme for the benefit of the transgenders. |
