Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 2: The cat is finally out of bag with some candidates filing their nomination for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Srinagar Municipal Corporation. The election for these two positions in the SMC is slated for November 6.
Media Relations Officer, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Masarat Yusuf here said that for the post of Mayor two candidates filed their nomination while as for the post of Deputy Mayor similar number of candidates filed their nomination.
"In accordance with the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Municipal Corporation, Srinagar, Junaid Azim Mattu, councilor from ward numbers 14, 18 and 65 and Ghulam Rasool Hajam, councilor from ward number 30 have filed their nomination papers in SMC today for the post of Mayor," said the Media Relations Officer.
Masarat said that similarly for the post of Deputy Mayor, Sheikh Imran, councilor from ward number 2 and Mohammad Salaam Lone, councilor from ward number 58 have filed their nomination papers. She said the election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor shall be held in the 1st session of the general council of Municipal Corporation, Srinagar scheduled on November 6, 2018.
For the post of Mayor, Junaid has the backing of Peoples Conference and is the candidate of the party while as Ghulam Rasool Hajam is the Congress candidate for the post. At the same time, Sheikh Imran would be the Congress candidate for the post of Deputy Mayor with Mohammad Salaam Lone being the candidate of Peoples Candidate for the same post.
It was expected that Imran would be fight it out for the post of Mayor of SMC but that is not to be. He has chosen to file the nomination for the post of Deputy Mayor with the support of Congress. Imran is not the member of Congress party but is just an associate member of the Congress party. He had won election the civic polls from the Nishat ward of Srinagar city.
Pertinent to mention here that Junaid Mattu had parted ways with National Conference (NC) after the party decided not to take part in the local body polls and boycotted the same. His nomination for the post of Mayor by Peoples Conference is no less than a home coming for him since he was the member of the party in his initial days of politics and was close to party chairman Sajad Gani Lone.
Parties like Congress and Peoples Conference have been claiming support of most of the independent candidates. The picture in this regard would be clear on November 6 when the elections would be held. In the SMC there are 53 independents followed by 18 from Congress and four from BJP.
