Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Nov 4: The Power Development Department (PDD) in the state spends huge sum on account of cutting and pruning of trees in order to ensure that vagaries of weather do not affect the power supply as and when something wrong happens on the weather front.
However, on ground it has been noticed for generations and decades that a wind of velocity of hardly few kilometers per hour and snowfall of few centimeters puncture balloon of the PDD higher ups claim that they stand by providing round the clock power supply to the people of Jammu & Kashmir. As and when the winds hit the different places of the state the power supply goes off and the department officers say that since branches of trees have fallen on transmission lines it is difficult for them to restore the power supply. At the end of the day it is the common man who has to suffer due to the power breakdown. Same thing is witnessed when few centimeters of snow come down from the heaven on the ground. The people of Kashmir are facing this problem over the past few days and PDD officers continue to remain unmoved. They are busy in making claims while doing little on ground to restore power supply to the people of valley. As soon as rains came down on Thursday and wind started to blow in many areas of valley the power supply went off and the people had to wait for at least 20 hours before the restoration work was completed. On Saturday people of Kashmir witnessed worst power outage after the valley was greeted with few inches of snow. The power supply has been restored to handful of areas so far.
Same situation is witnessed in the Jammu division where winds and rains virtually wreck the back of people since they are subjected to unscheduled long power cuts. The people face numerous problems as and when the power goes off due to the vagaries of nature. People in general believe that there is no accountability in the PDD and it is due to this reason that officers of the department bully not only the common masses, but also the people at helm in the government. The PDD officers come out with technical details that are not understood by the people in government and not to talk of an ordinary citizen. It has been observed for decades now that no responsibility whatsoever is fixed on the officers of the department and they are able to run away as and when something wrong happens. Given the fact that there are not one but many chief engineers of the department in both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions of the state the buck stops nowhere. Residents of the state have been witnessing problems on account of erratic power supply for ages now and there seems to be no improvement in the same. The world may have progressed by leaps and bounds, but when it comes to Jammu & Kashmir there is no concept of progress at least on the power front.
