Mahagathbandahn no where in sight
11/4/2018 10:23:02 PM
Omkar Dattatray

As the general elections
are coming nearer the much talked about and much thought out Mahagathbandhan seems a far cry and uptopian and not a reality. The grand alliance seem no where in sight thanks to the ever increasing contradictions and diverse ideological philosophies of the aligning political parties whether of Pan India character and the regional parties. Infact the grand alliance is not taking a true form, structure and shape despite the efforts of different political parties across the country. The fact is that Congress party is making all out efforts to forge a unity in the opposition parties but the unity of non BJP parties to oppose BJP and topple the Modi's NDA has remained elusive thanks to oppositions ego of interests and ego clashes. The constituents of so called Mahagathbandhan are not a broad spectrum of the regional parties nor has it taken a pan Indian political shape. Infact Mahagathbandhan seems to be failing and is like a house of cards. Thus before its final shape, size and structure, it is failing and this should be cause of concern for the Non- BJP or the so called secular political parties. There seems to be no unity among the parties trying to form a grand alliance to defeat the NDA in 2019 elections. Different oppostion political parties who want to form a joint alliance to fight BJP lead NDA are in the wishful thinking and are openly contradicting each other to show their presence and are not ready to forgo their eagos for the purpose of forging a strong and viable opposition unity which will be a formidable challenge to BJP in elections. Thus before taking a final shape and structure the big alliance is no where in sight. Different political parties are following different paths and are not ready to sacrifice their ego and interests for the purpose of forming a big alliance to fight in unison the BJP which is a great force to reckon with and is a cadre based organisation and has a great following in the country. What will be the form of grand alliance is not clear. The alianing parties supremos have national ambitious and thus there unity ,moves seems to be failing before taking shape and form. Mayawati of BSP and Mamta Banerjee of Trinmol Congress nourse national ambitious and both want to be projected as the Prime ministerial candidates. Both Mayawati and Mamta Bamerjee object to the projection of congress President Rahul Gandhi as the prospective prime ministerial candidate for 2019 elections. Thus has the Congress the champion of the Mahagathbandhan failed to project its prime ministerial candidate before general elections and now the alliance parties if at all it will be a reality will decide the prime ministerial candidate after the elections if the so called grand alliance comes to being and in this way congress and other political parties try to forge and an alliance which will be fruitful in the run up to the elections of 2019. S.P, B.S.P, RJD of Lalu Yadav, Trinmol Congress, CPI(M), Forward Block, leftists, AIMIM, Nationalist Congress party of Sharad power and other alliance parties are the partners in the prospective grand alliance for 2019 elections. Lalu Prasad Yadav is the leader who has coined the term Mahagath Bandan and is a great advocate and architect of grand alliance which is in the process of becoming. In addition to this JDU of Sharad Yadav is also a part of so called grand alliance. But a mot question is will Rahuls leadership be acceptable to every party? The answer to this question is a big No. Rahul Gandhi's leadership is not acceptable to each party of the so called Mahagathbandan. Five Indian states of MP, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Mizoram and Kerala are going to polls before general elections of 2019 and the opposition unity and grand alliance will be a litmus test in these assembly elections. In M.P and Chattisgarh S.P and BSP is not alinging with congress in assembly elections. In U.P also agreement on seat sharing of Congress with SP is very difficult and is in rough wheather so for as parliament elections is concerned. In Telegana there will be no alliance of Congress with All India Itthad- ul- muslemeen. In M.P and Chattisgarh it is difficult that Left, Trinmol Congress and Congress will come together to fight elections. In Chattisgarh B. S.P is alinging with Ajeet Jogi. On one hand opposition parties are saying that they can go to any extent and give sacrifices to topple Modi in 2019 but on the other hand they are not ready to make compromises to give Mahagathbandhan a final shape. But at the same time it is not clear that will be the format of grand alliance. It is only the Modi fear which may lead to Mahagathbandhan if any otherwise there are petty party interests and clashes in cobbling a big alliance. Senior leader of Congress Salman Khurshid has opined that it is difficult for the congress to fight elections on its own and therefore there is great need for opposition unity or what can be called Mahagathbandan. Infact Congress has to fight elections in co- operation with other political parties if it wants to present a tough fight to BJP. It seems that congress has accepted defeat before 2019 elections and the Mahagathbandhan is a failed exercise given current political arithmetic of the constituting units of the secular alliance. Now there are talks of third front and grand alliance in actual terms seems to be theoretical assumption and not a reality. Hindutva surge by saffron parties has forced and brokered a peace deal between traditional rivals the Congress and TDP of Chandra Babu Naidu ahead of 2019 elections to fight the juggernaut of BJP. There are efforts afoot to weave a third front to take on the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections and in this regad TDP President N.Chandra Babu Naidu has met NCP chief Sharad Pawar, NC President Farooq Abudullah, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, BSP supremo Mayawati and the ex- BJP leader Yashwant Sinha and also met congress President Rahul Gandhi. The coming together of the parties will change to political discourse so far as the opposition unity is concerned. There is great need to form opposition unity by whatever name called but unity should be there to fight BJP out in the 2019 elections. This is an opportune time to form such an opposition alliance of non BJP parties to take on BJP in Lok Sabha elections. The regional parties also need to think beyond petty selfish and individual consideration and take steps along with the national parties to forge an alliance to fight the upcoming general elections, otherwise the call for grand alliance is only a theoretical proportion. The Congress being the Pan India political party should take the earnest efforts along with other political and regional parties to weave a grand alliance to attack BJP and come victorious if possible. In weaving opposition alliance the parties alianing should forego their egos and selfishness and cobble opposition unity to fight BJP. There is nothing in a name as a rose called by any other name will smell the same. Therefore third front or grand alliance or whatever it is but it may be forged to challenge the formidable NDA in the Lok Sabha election 2019. But it is immature at present to say what form will the grand alliance or Mahagathbandhan take in the coming days.
