Controversy over Chenani Panchayat polls | BJP-backed candidate wins with one vote | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 24: Controversy erupted in one of the Panchayats of Chenani in Udhampur district after a BJP-backed candidate was declared as winner with the margin of one vote. Even as the voting completed peacefully in Bashat Panchayat of Chenani, the locals alleged that there was tie between two contesting candidates with each candidate bagging 371 votes. As the confusion continued, the staff counted votes twice, but the result was same. However, situation changed when some rightwing leaders approached a police officer who allegedly pressurized the staff members to reject one vote of Sujad Hussain. Hence, BJP backed Surinder Singh was declared as winner with one vote (got 371 votes) after defeating Sujad Hussain (who got 370 votes). Hussain said that he would approach the court to seek justice as to why his one vote was cancelled even as they justified it twice in their counting. |
