Police register FIR in booth capturing of Rahalthal Panchayat

Kishtwar, Nov 25: In a major security and administrative lapse, the unruly mob at the alleged instigation of a candidate ransacked the counting hall at Mughal Maidan wherein the counting for Rahalthal Panchayat was going on.
As per the details available with Early Times, the unruly mob not only ransacked the counting hall, but also manhandled and beat up the polling staff leaving them injured. The mob also decamped with ballot boxes and threw them into near by stream forcing the army to act and help the administration in restoring the law and order.
The eyewitnesses told the Early Times, that only two police personnels were deployed by the administration to look after the security of the counting hall where hundreds of supporters of different candidates assembled to witness the result.
One of the polling staff members told the Early Times that they were beaten by the supporters of Bashir Ahmad who was contesting the leaving many of them injured. He said that administration had left them at the mercy of the God and said that had army not arrived, they would have been killed by the mob. He said that the incident took place at the time when Tariq Hussain Wani had almost won the election. He said that it was 5th and last round of counting when Tariq Hussain Wani was leading by around 104 votes while around 90 votes were about to counted when the mob took the law into their hands.

The FIR, the copy of which is available with Early Times stated that Bashir Ahmad left the counting hall in the middle of the counting and in the meantime the unruly mob entered inside and ransacked the furniture and beat the polling staff.
Earlier as soon as the incident took place, senior officials reached the site and took the stock of situation.
Meanwhile the administration is mulling the option of re-poll, but no formal order has been issued in this regard, however the winning candidate Tariq Hussain Wani objected to the move of administration and demanded that the election officials should declare him as winner by recording the statements of the polling officials and other officials associated with election.
The various political and social activist also called for stern action against the culprits. They called upon the higher officials to fix the responsibility on account of administrative lapses. They also called for arrest of culprits involved in ransacking and destroying of ballot papers and other polling related material.
