Agencies
New Delhi, Nov 25: After six Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) terrorists were shot dead during a fierce encounter with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian on Sunday, violent protesters took to streets, throwing stones at the forces and vehicles in and around the region. Apart from the terrorists, a soldier and civilian also lost their lives in the ensuing gun battle in the Batagund area of Shopian district.
"Protesters pelt stones on the vehicles of security forces in Shopian following the encounter in Kapran Batagund area which concluded earlier today. 6 terrorists were neutralised and one Army jawan died in action," the news agency.
A joint team of army, CRPF paramilitary forces and Jammu and Kashmir police launched a cordon and search operation following credible inputs about the presence of terrorists at Batagund area of Kapran. As the operation was going on, the terrorists fired upon the search party which retaliated successfully leading to an encounter this morning.
One of the six terrorists killed in the encounter has been identified as the murderer of a former public prosecutor in Shopian a year ago. Another terrorist eliminated in the operation is the killer of a teenager in the area. The group he belongs to also posted a gruesome video, showing a blood-soaked knife and further threatened of more such attacks.
Apart from the gunning down, six rifles and ammunition were recovered from the encounter spot. Followed by the encounter the target house where the terrorists were hiding was destroyed by the troops.
This was the third major encounter in less than a week in which 16 terrorists have been gunned down across the Valley.
