Relentless efforts needed to restore Dal Lake's pristineglory: Advisor Sharma | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 29: Advisor to Governor, Kewal Kumar Sharma today chaired a meeting to review the functioning of Lake and Water Development Authority (LAWDA) during his first visit to the summer capital after assuming the charge. The Advisor appreciated the efforts of LAWDA for conserving the Dal Lake and asked for making more engagements regarding the lake and other catchment areas. He said that a lot of work has been done but more work needs to be done by undertaking relentless efforts to restore the pristine glory of Dal. The Advisor emphasized on Geo Tagging of the lake and its periodic updating to identify new developments so that corrective steps can be initiated. The Advisor stressed on speedy development of Rakh-e-Arth Budgam and Chandpora Colony, complete with all civic amenities for rehabilitation of Dal dwellers. The Advisor also called for strong inter-departmental coordination and directed for undertaking Zonal Development Plan around Dal Lake. He said that proper monitoring of all the measures taken for conservation of lake should be undertaken continuously. Earlier, VC LAWDA, Dr Syed Abid Rasheed gave a detailed presentation on the working of LAWDA and the achievements made so far. The meeting also discussed upgradation of STPs. The Advisor was informed that IIT Roorkie has prepared DPR for upgradaton of STPs at Hazratbal, Habbak and Laam based on SAP technology at an estimated cost of Rs 46 crores. The meeting was informed that there has been no shrinkage of Dal area. As per 2009 satellite imagery, the area of Dal Lake was 25.76 kms which has remained unchanged till date. The area was same according to survey undertaken by Lawrence in 19th century also. To arrest the pollution, 1000 houseboats are being fitted with Bio digesters at an estimated cost of Rs 13.63 crores. In addition to it Rs 25.50 crores is being spent on development of Doledamb for relocation and realignment of houseboats. The meeting also discussed manual and mechanical deweeding of Dal Lake. VC LAWDA said that 16km walkway around Dal Lake is being constructed around Dal Lake. |
