Pretence of Gau-Raksha - alarming for the society
Mahadeep Singh JamwalMahadeep Singh Jamwal12/5/2018 8:48:20 PM
Frightening murder of a police officer and killing of a local youth by the mob in Bulandshahar (UP) over alleged cow slaughter and subsequent registration of a case, naming four persons of prominent right-wing group' signal towards the activism of 'Gau-Rakshaks' beyond the control of law enforcing agencies. In the backdrop of this incident, my script is analysis of Fake 'Gau-Rakshaks' that are Alarming for the Society. Millions of Hindu revere and worship cow and consider it as refuge of all auspiciousness. The 'Rig-Veda' insinuate to the mystical relationship between the cow and the universe, while the 'Atharva-Veda' calls the cow the "all producing and all containing universe". The Hindu goddess "Bhoomi Devi" is shown in the form of a cow: and represents the earth. It is a symbol of divine bounty on earth. The cow was venerated as the mother goddess in the early Mediterranean civilizations. Lord Krishna most worshipped lord grew up as a herder. When we peep deep into the Hindu Vedic scriptures we find that the cow is a sacred animal in the Hindu religion. 'Pancha-gavya' (Panchamrit), a mixture of five by-products of cow milk, curd, ghee, urine and dung, is used in tradition Hindu rituals. The cow is honored, garlanded and given special feedings at festivals all over India by Hindus. In India, more than 3,000 institutions called 'Gau-Shalas' care for old and infirm and data by animal husbandry statistics speaks of about 44,900,000 cows in India, the highest in the world. But hard reality is that while some old and infirm cows are treated in 'Gaushalas', the rest are generally abandoned at public places such as railway stations and bazaars. We come across in 'Shri Garg Sanhita', a book on Lord 'Krishna', a person in services of the cows in Gaushalas is termed as 'Gopal', a person maintaining Gaushala owns and protect five lakh cows termed as 'Up-Nand', with nine lakh cows as 'Nand', ten lakh cows as 'Brishbhanu', fifty lakh as 'Brish Bhanuvar', and he who owns and protects one crore cows was crowned as 'Nandraj'. It speaks of the importance of the person protecting cows in 'Duapur Yug', whereas in 'Kali Yug' these cow protectors owing to their activities are pseudo cow protectors and to just run their political shops. These self proclaimed 'Gau-Rakshaks' are criminals and a blot on the humanity. Deprived of legal protection, animals are defenseless against exploitation and abuse by humans. Too many people are oblivious to the cruelty that animals have to endure unless we help them. It is our social obligation as humans to help protect the animals with which we share our environments but so many have been doing the exact opposite by doing horrific things.
If we shuffle the pages of travelogue of cow protection in India, we find the Hindu sentiment in favor of cow protection is old, widespread and deep-seated. We find that the cow protection movement demanding end to cow slaughter has its seedling from British India time with the support from Swami Dayananda Saraswati, the founding father of Arya Samaj. Cow protection societies established in various regions of India starting at 1882. Violence was also witnessed culminating into riots in northern India and cow protection movement was seen as a Hindu tool of oppression. In 1888, a high court in Allahabad ruled that cows are not "sacred" animals as defined in section 295 of the Indian Penal Code. The Indian cow has every now and then grazed the political, economic and social landscape. Historically, it has been a prominent cause of communal strife in the country. We remember anti-cow slaughter agitation of 1966, when the then Home minister, Gulzari Lal Nanda resigned, taking responsibility for the administration's failure to maintain law and order but presently denying such responsibility the ministers and politicians of a particular party patronize and add fuel to the fire.
The recent victimization of particular section of the society in the name of the 'Gau-Raksha' has brought the holy cow back into discussion and debates. The gravity of the activities by the people under the canopy of 'Gau-Rakshaks' can well be conceived from the vocalization of the Prime Minister Narinder Modi, (Reportedly as compulsion and because of aggressive attitude of people and other political parties branding BJP governments as umbrella cover to these Gau-Rakshaks, lynching and committing atrocities on Muslims and Dalits), that "a handful of opportunistic people who in the name of cow protection" are trying to "poison social harmony", "70-80 per cent are involved in activities which have no place in society and they, therefore, don the mantle of Gau-Rakshaks to hide their ills". He further said that fake Gau-Rakshaks have nothing to do with cows. They want to create tension in society. If you go through their antecedents, you will find 80% 'Gau-Raksha Dal' have a criminal background". He went further to issue instructions to government as to prepare a dossier on "those who consider themselves great Gau-Rakshak. All this concern and instructions of PM lying into the dust bin and have fallen flat and every third day the national TVs abuzz with the atrocities of this unbridled scanty group of Gau-Rakshaks. Irrespective of taking the things serious, Gau-Rakshaks and many right-wing organizations across the country hit back at Prime Minister for his comments against cow vigilantism. Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) protested against the Prime Minister's statement and comment.. They went further to describe Modi as not worthy of PM and held "Buddhi Shuddhi Yagya" (purification of brain) across India to give better sense to the PM and also looking for options to slap a legal notice on PM. RSS also downgraded the statement of PM that such people constitute 80 per cent of 'Gau Rakshaks' in the country. It also remarked that the "RSS has always espoused the cause of Gau-Raksha". The side effect of RSS bull dozed PM the very next day while speaking in Telangana, Modi again referred to "Fake Cow Protectors" but this time he called them a "handful" rather than 70-80 % stated earlier.
We have witnessed mob violence, police action and rising communalism, lynching of persons of some particular community. These are directly related to cow protection and all this non sense is the handiwork of 'Fake Gao-Rakshaks' that stand patronized by some fanatic organizations operating unchecked in India and subsequently they also glorify such lynching. We find on 15th October 2002 in Duleena village of Jajjar district in Haryana, where persons of a particular class, who were basically scavengers of dead animals and were responsible for removing carcass from the societal location, were lynched by the frenzied mob branding them as cow slaughterers, led by the communal forces believed to be Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, and Shiv Sena. This was followed by the statement of a particular organization that "The life of a cow is more precious than that of a human being". Such statements itself speaks of their mind-set, full of dirt and filth having no respect for the human being. Whether such organizations deserve recognition/existence or demolition in secular country like India? I leave it to the conclusion of readers.
The Hindu sentiment in favor of cow protection is old, widespread and deep-seated and we have laws dealing with the subject as 'The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act' 1960, to prevent the infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering on animal etc, but still we require Animal Welfare Board to act as an umbrella or frame work and it is inspirational in nature; seeking to provide the best possible structures, systems and provisions to protect the welfare of all animals rather than to dance for cow protection only. It is but prevails in India that we claim our self as most secular but always on the forefront to promote, sympathize with pseudo secular communal forces and get exposed of our deceptive character. Some hunch organizations are always creating troubles in the society to set their own agenda and they stand fully backed by rascals sitting in the political set up and in typical wearing, in order to exploit the deep seated sentiments of communities on religious base and 'Gau-Raksha' is one of them. It is time to fragmentize this canopy of fake Gau-Rakshaks by a hard blow of the administration and by the so called secular claimants sitting in the power corridor requiring to shed their pseudo secular character and come up with a soft policy on protection of all animals including cow and with strict measures to deal with this 'Faouj' termed by PM as 'Fake Gau-Rakshaks' to hide their ills" and they have nothing to do with cows. Expecting no results and relief from self acclaimed Gau-Rakshaks, indulging in open loot, violence, plunder and massacre of targeted persons from selective section, from the Modi government in center and BJP ruled states, accused of patronizing this 'Fauj' on behest of RSS, VHP, and Bajrang Dal, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre and some states to take action against so-called cow vigilantes, who are allegedly spreading violence and committing atrocities against Dalits and minorities and complete violation of Article 21 of the Constitution as it takes away the victims' "Right to life and personal liberty". The PIL has arrayed as parties Ministry of Home Affairs, governments of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Jharkhand (most effected states and ruled by BJP).
Before concluding it is imperative to unmask some hard realities which do not appear to these fake Gau-Rakshaks such as; the cows are kept in close proximity till they can be milked, once serve their purpose they are cast away in the concrete jungle of urbanities. These self protectors of Gau-Mata' in the guise of Gau-Rakshaks in urban area never come to the rescue of stray cows that start scavenging for food in malodorous stack searching for plastic bags, news paper, thrown waste of kitchen and what not to eat but these fake Gau-Rakshaks surface like termites taking law into their hands to show their muscle power on innocent people lawfully performing their social responsibilities towards the society.
