Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 7: The callousness on part of Power Development Department (PDD) has consumed yet another lineman when he was discharging his duty at Feeder No. 6 of Channi Himmat Sub Division Jammu.
Sources informed Early Times that Prem Nath S/o Munshi Ram R/o Saria Rakwal, received fatal head injuries when he skidded off from electric pole and fallen into a nearby nallah while repairing the electric snag in Channi area of PDD Division-I on January 5 at 10 am.
"His colleagues rushed the injured lineman to the Government Medical College Jammu for advance treatment where the team of doctor declared his as brought dead", disclosed eyewitness.
As per SRO number 328-PDD of 2011 dated 24-11-2011, the government has to provide ex-gratia relief to the tune of Rs. 3 lakhs to those killed in harness, while Rs. 1 lakh to those who sustain 100 percent disability during discharging duty.
"But so far not a single deceased got the benefit of SRO-328 and every times the higher up of the PDD denied the same benefit in favour of linemen", alleged General Secretary of All Jammu and Kashmir Electrical Department Linemen and Worker Union, Girdhari Lal Bhagat.
He alleged that there were nearly 180 linemen were killed while discharging their duty so far and mostly were need based workers. Besides 30 linemen were killed only in one year from January to December, 2018 in Jammu Province but the officials never heed to the plight of the linemen.
"However, the PDD department has claimed that we have committed to provide an insulator kits to the linemen when they are repairing technical snags. But ironically whenever a mishap happens, they have been found without safety gears", said Vice President Tara Chand of JKEDLWU.
The union leader raised questions that however, the deceased Prem Nath was put on duty as spare person and how he has been allowed to ride on the electrical pole. Basically, the officials were present on the duty has forced the lineman to ride on the pole that too without safety gears.
