Ah, Mehboobian 'Sons of the soil'!
Omkar Dattatray1/23/2019 10:31:41 PM
Mehbooba Mufti the ex-chief Minister and PDP president has stoked an avoidable controversy over her controversial remark that terrorists and militants are the 'sons of the soil' and are an asset. It is very unfortunate and strange as well that Mehbooba chose the army day to vent her controversial views on terrorists and home grown militants by calling them as sons of the soil ostensibly to score political points by praising militants. When the nation was busy celebrating army day and paying tributes to the valiant army jawans for safeguarding and sacrificing their precious lives, Mehbooba chose the 15th of January, 2019 which is army day to stoke unnecessary controversy by showering praises on militants and calling them as sons of the soil which is very unfortunate and disturbing phenomenon and rightly deserves wide condemnation from all right thinking people cutting across party lines. The controversial remarks with the sole aim of gaining the sympathy and boosting the sagging image of PDP among the gullible masses of Kashmir is a disservice and amounts to disrespect to the valiant and disciplined army jawans, who are defending the integrity and sovereignty of the country at the risk of their precious lives. However, it is not the first time that Mehbooba Mufti has given such an unwarranted and uncalled for statement but it is on record that ever since her political carrier began in 1996 she has been calling militants and terrorists as innocent and the sons of the soil to earn brownie points and for gaining sympathy of Kashmiri masses. Mehbooba is changing colors like chameleon and it is abundantly when she gives contradictory statements and when she changes her statements in power and out of power. It is very unfortunate that on the occasion of army day when the nation remembered the sacrifices and valor of the brave soldiers former J&K CM and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti stoked yet another controversy seen as an appeasement push. Not only this she pushed and advocated for talks with local militant leaders along with the leadership of Hurriyat Conference to end gun culture in J&K. It is the dynamism, flexibility and magnanimous nature of Indian democracy that the person who calls militants as son of the soil is allowed to become Chief Minister of the state. It cannot be allowed in other democracies of the world. The height is this that ex-CM has said that right from the time I came into politics in 1996 I have been saying that local militants are sons of the soil and our maximum efforts should be to save them because they are assets. While the fact is that those who indulge in killings, abductions, kidnappings and other heinous crimes are the enemies of the nation and a great liability and a burden and they are not innocent and cannot be called the sons of the soil but they are evils of the soil and should be dealt with strong hands and should not be showered with praises. PDP Chief has urged the centre to engage J&K militant leadership in talks. Terming local militants as (sons of the soil), she said efforts should be made to save them as they are assets according to Mehbooba. She advocates for dialogue with the local militant leadership in J&K to end gun culture. But she never advises, counsels and admonishes the local militants who are innocent in the terminology of Mehbooba to shun violence and throw away the guns which are alien to Kashmiri culture. She pleads that right now talks should be held with Pakistan, Separatists leadership and with local leadership of militants to end the gun culture as according to her it is the militants who possess the gun and they can end the gun culture. However she hastened to add that it is too early to talk with the militants. What a contradiction in itself? She can't earn accolades over her controversial remark but rightly deserves condemnation and criticism which has been heaped on her. Mehbooba and her party PDP has always been pro militant and is trying to capitalize on her pro militant stance and thus is giving statements which smell foul of militant bias. Yes militants and stone pelters are innocent local boys in the eyes of Mehbooba and they should be saved being assets is the contention of Ex-CM and PDP president. She often gives pro militant statements to gain their and Kashmiris sympathy. She had even questioned the timing of filing of charge sheet in the 2016 JNU sedition case, in which among other seven Kashmiri students among others have been named saying that students were being used to score political points ahead of Lok Sabha elections. Kavinder Gupta Ex-Dupty CM and leader of BJP has criticized Mehbooba Mufti for her 'sons of the soil remark'. BJP condemns Mehbooba Mufit for terming local militants as the sons of the soil. The controversial statement of Mehbooba was a shocker on army day. She said that she believed in J&K, the dialogue not only with Hurriyat Conference but also with militant leadership and with Pakistan to end gun culture. She further said Kashmiri students of JNU are being used to score political points. She said when UPA was in power, it decided to sent Afzal Guru to the gallows and to this day J&K is paying the price. NC accuses Mehbooba Mufti of political opportunity-ism, hypocrisy and blackmail. NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar accused her of changing sides the movement she is out of power. In June, 2016 Mehbooba Mufti addressed a press conference along with union Home Minister Rajnath Singh after the killing of HM commander Burhan Wani. The controversy started after Mehbooba Mufti in an apparent reference to civilian killings said, "They are not going to army camps and police stations to buy toffees and milk…….." Ali Mohammad Sagar said over the apology tendered by Mehbooba over her toffee remark of 2016, "It indicates one thing for sure that she is feeling guilty". He further said that PDP claimed that South Kashmir is their political base. However, nothing of that sort is seen in south Kashmir today. But highly educated youth are picking guns. It is a slap on the face of the party according to NC general secretary. There are not two opinions about the fact that Mehboba is militant friendly as she visited the families of the slain militants in south Kashmir last month in an attempt to gain political sympathy. When in power she had said, BJP did a commendable job and out of power she termed the decision of alliance with BJP a political suicide. BJP rightly accuses Mehbooba of perusing soft separatism to win polls. It is the Ex-CM's frustration that she has started speaking the language of the Separatists. Kavinder Gupta said that BJP government at the centre is ready to hold dialogue as per Indian constitution. A day after Mehbooba dubbed local militants as the 'sons of the soil' Kavinder Gupta of BJP accused her of perusing "soft separatism" to win "communal sympathy" ahead of upcoming state assembly and Lok Sabha elections. He also accused PDP, NC and Congress of supporting anti national elements to polarize voters. He lashed out at former CM and said Mehbooba has, "humiliated the Indain security forces by issuing such a statement on army day". He said every person who is anti national and works at the behest of his 'akas'(masters) from across the border is a militant and playing politics over his killing, funeral and ensuing agitation is really condemnable. He blamed political exploitation by PDP, NC and Congress for the renewed turmoil in the valley. Back to sons of soil statement regarding local militants by Mehbooba it is crystal clear that there is no difference between a local militant and the foreign one as militant is a militant whether local or outsider and he should be dealt with as militant and deserves no sympathy. Militants are evils of the soil and not the sons of the soil by any criteria whatsoever.
