Has Qayoom Wani reconciled with Naeem Akhter? Ask Kashmiri politicians
2/3/2019 11:54:14 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 3: Even as the former Jammu and Kashmir Teachers Forum (JKTF) President Abdul Qayoom Wani has joined Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jammu recently, has he reconciled with former Education Minister Naeem Akhter as well. This question is being asked in the political circles in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Wani, who was seen as an outspoken leader of the teachers, had to face tough days when Naeem Akhter was the Education minister in the previous government led by the Peoples Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janta Party alliance.
Officials said Naeem Akhter had got Qayoom Wani, who was working as teacher, transferred to a remote village to allegedly "teach him a lesson."
Sources said Akhter that time wanted to break the back of JKTF lest they take to streets against his "dictatorial policies."
When Akhter took over as the Education Minister, government school teachers would take to streets against his policies and Wani used to issue statements against him.
But as the teachers refused to toe line with the "dictatorial policies" of Akhter, then CM Mehbooba Mufti had to finally replace Akhter with Altaf Bukhari as the new Education Minister.
Sources said it was after Bukhari took over that the protests by teachers could subside.
Official sources said Bukhari had finally transferred Wani back to Srinagar but that the latter didn't enjoy good relations with Akhter after that as well.
But now that the former trade union leader has joined the same party where Akhter calls the shots, the politicians have raised questions in political circles.
"Has he (Wani) gone for a pact with him (Akhter) or the two will be at loggerheads in PDP as well," a senior leader of National Conference told Early Times.
The NC leader said they hoped Wani would have joined their party. he said the things about relations between Wani and Akhter would only get clear in the coming days when Wani will start rallying as PDP candidate for north Kashmir for upcoming Parliament elections.
"Both of them belong to same north Kashmir and will be interesting to see if the adversaries work jointly," said a senior leader.
Despite repeated attempts, Naeem Akhter and Qayoom Wani couldn't be contacted for comments.
