Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 3: What was witnessed on Sunday in a jam-packed auditorium of SKICC was indeed rarest of the rare scenes. A governor and not an elected representative was pleading the case of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the most empathetic, compelling and earnest manner.
The audience present inside the hall were dazzled to see the confidence with which governor Satya Pal Malik raised the issue of exuberant air fares of the flights operating for Jammu and Kashmir and how the trend was hitting the tourism sector of the state hard. He said that he was speaking on behalf of the people of the state and underscored that during snowfall the air prices rise to 28 thousand rupees which amounts to a back and forth flight to Dubai.
Highlighting the odd bearing of the rise in air tickets on J&K tourism Malik said, "jab athayees hazaar mai Dilli se yahan aana paday tou kesay tourism behtar hoga ,(How would tourism thrive here if we pay same amount from Delhi to Srinagar in which a person would fly to Dubai back and forth)."
Meanwhile, with such empathy at display, the mainstream political parties are finding themselves in tight spot with people questioning them widely on social media that it was they who were ought to raise such important issue with the central government when they were ruling the power corridors in the state.
Meanwhile, many netizens accused the political parties including BJP, PDP, NC and Congress of undermining the real issues pertaining to the state of Jammu and Kashmir and inventing new ways of keeling the VVIP racism intact and alive in the state. "The parties who were elected to power by the common people were more interested in their own salary hikes rather than addressing the plethora of hardships being faced by the common masses at large. These main political parties ruled the state for decades but didn't bother for a single time to raise the issue of unprecedented spike in the air fares with the central government," was how one netizen described the situation on his Facebook wall.
Meanwhile, the political parties who claim to be the champions of the Jammu and Kashmir's cause had to eat a humble pie on Sunday when they found Governor Malik who assured office just six months ago raising real issues with the Prime Minister Modi as the latter was on a one day state visit to inaugurate several developmental projects. "No single political group has been able to such such lucid but honest language to highlight the genuine concerns of the people of the state. All these groups who keep raking up emotive issues and making efforts to stoke tensions should today hold themselves accountable and see what they have done for the people who have elected them to power," says one senior official present among the audience during the event.
Meanwhile, the reaction of the political groups would be worthwhile if the central government addresses the concerns raised by Governor Malik with PM Modi. Will they welcome the decisions or remain silent stoically is the question that will be answered by the time to come.
