Pakistani hostilities make Jammu undeclared battlefield! | Fortnight on, normal life, economic activities affected in winter capital region | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 6: Whereas as the voices are going thicker that India and Pakistan should avoid any further military escalation, Jammu continues to be like a "undeclared battlefield" facing hostilities from the enemy county something that has affected normal life and economic activities in the winter capital region. It has been ten days since Indian Air Force had attacked terror camps in Balakote but for the Jammu region the Pakistani forces are continuing with their attacks. The general public opinion is that if Pakistan was doing so to deliberately affect economic activities including tourism and trade in the Jammu region. After a few hours of lull on the LoC and the international border, Pakistani rangers on March 6 morning started firing in the Mankote sector of Poonch forcing the people to run for shelter. Witnesses said normal life and educational activities remained affected in the district as people preferred to stay indoors mainly in the underground bunkers. The attack in Poonch comes two days after a similar aggression in the region. On March 4 Pakistan had violated ceasefire by targeting forward posts and villages along the Line of Control in Akhnoor. Pakistani forces have been firing mortar shells and resorted to indiscriminate firing to target forward posts and the villages in Jammu region. Before attack at Akhnoor, Nowshera sector of Rajouri district was in the line of the fire. It is pertinent to mention that in the last around a week, four persons including three members of a family were killed and several others injured in cross-border shelling. Tourism players in Jammu the tourist inflow has come down since the rise in Pakistani shelling. "When the people get to know that shelling is taking place along borders in Jammu, they avoid visiting the region," said a tourism player. A senior official said the agricultural activities along the border districts have been badly affected. "For the past around a fortnight, the farmers have been unable to attend to their fields and this is a serious issue," said a senior official posted in Rajauri district. The people of Jammu have been appealing the Raj Bhawan to come to their rescue but any respite is awaited. |
