HC seeks timeframe to overcome lack of infrastructure in sports

Srinagar, Mar 14: The state high Court today sought timeframe for "overcoming" the lack of infrastructure in sports in the Jammu and Kashmir.
Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, a division bench of the court directed all the parties to have a joint meeting in order to work out the lack of basic facilities in sports infrastructure.
The court also directed to prioritize the selection process of Rehber-e-Khel in which almost 3000 recruitments are to be made.
The division bench also directed utilizing the water bodies for sports venues and in this connection Committee of Experts for Dal Lake has been asked to inform the court for creating sports activities in the lake, the flagship of Kashmir tourism.
Additional Advocate General Shah Amir informed the court that in terms of order of March 12 he along with other visited the Bakshi Stadium and Indoor Stadium in Srinagar and creation of infrastructure in both the stadiums is underway and also the funds are available with the department. He said the funds will be utilized for upgradation of infrastructure in sports activities.
In one of the previous hearing, the court observed that various Sports Associations impleaded as respondents are receiving funds from the Ministry of Youth, Affairs and Sports, Government of India but have failed to respond to the repeated notices by the Court.
"There is no dispensation of any of the allocation to these sports organizations in the State of J&K. Such a situation cannot be countenanced under any circumstances.," the court had said and directed Secretary, Department of Youth Services and Sports, Government of J&K to convene meeting(s) of the authorized representatives to place an action plan regarding the creation of facilities which are required in respect of the concerned sports; the manner in which the facilities would be created; the allocation of funds in respect thereof and the manner in which interest in the sports concerned would be generated and opportunity created to the children and youth in the State of J&K to participate in the sports.
