SKUAST-J organizes Beekeeping awareness camp

Udhmapur, Mar 20: To acquaint the farmers with modern techniques of bee-keeping and honey production one-day awareness cum training camp was held on 18-03-2019 at Jib, Udhampur. The camp was organised by AICRP (Honeybee and Pollinators), SKUAST-Jammu in collaboration with Department of Agriculture, Udhampur. The camp was attended by 50 farmers/beekeepers of the area. Highlighting the potential of the beekeeping, Dr. Devinder Sharma, PI of the Project said that bee-keeping is a profitable agro based industry and various initiatives has been taken by the government for increasing the production and marketing of the honey. He said that against existing potential of 1, 25,000 bee colonies in Jammu division, at present we have 40,000 Nos. of bee colonies which means hardly 30% of existing potential has been utilized and there is vast scope of bee keeping in J&K. Practical demonstration was given to the trainees in the Apiary. He spoke about the prospectus, present status of beekeeping in Jammu and impressed about insurance of bee colonies and protection of bee flora. He emphasized the farmers to adopt beekeeping to increases their income resources and stated that Jammu and Kashmir is one of the most important and suitable beekeeping places for the stationary and migratory beekeeping because of its favourable climatic conditions and diverse natural Dr. Manoj Kumar (Assoc. Prof., Vegetable).
