Early Times Report

JAMMU, Mar 26: Despite High Court's direction, the much awaited Eye Bank at Government Medical College and Hospital is yet to take off due to alleged nexus between private players and a few government officials.
Here it needs to be made clear that a number of directions from concerned authorities and the High Court, the Eye Bank remain a distant dream.
"Pertinently, Division Bench of the High Court had directed for establishing of two Eye Banks, one each in Jammu and Srinagar and the process of both projects was started at the same time. While the Eye Bank, Srinagar has become functional, the Jammu bank is yet to take off thanks to the lethargy of the authorities," sources told Early Times.
Sources said that GMC&H Jammu authorities were blaming Jammu and Kashmir Medical Supplies Corporation Limited (JKMSCL) for causing delay in the procurement of required equipment timely due to this the work is going on at snail's pace from past several years.
Sources further old that the most of the work for the set up of the Eye Bank viz infrastructure and others had already been done and for its functional, there is direly need required equipment but it has been delayed due to lackadaisical approach of the concerned department purposely.
Expressing shock over two different approaches by the same department for two capital cities, concerned citizens alleged discrimination towards Jammu region.
The failure of the authorities to make the Jammu eye bank functional has subjected the Jammu people to inconvenience. They have to travel to other places outside the state.
Managing Director, JKSMCL Shiv Kumar Gupta said that an order for procurement of required machines was placed and the machines are expected within two or three days.
