Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 26: In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old cleric and imam of a mosque in Kishtwar district has been arrested by the police for allegedly raping and impregnating a minor.
As per the details available with "Early Times", father of the 14-year-old girl approached the Kishtwar police alleging that his girl was raped by Hafiz Nazir Ahmed, a resident of Balgaran in Drabshalla block of Kishtwar. The girl's father stated that the accused, who was hired by the locals to lead prayers in the local mosque and teach their children, used to visit his house to teach his daughter.
The victim's father stated that after making sexual advances on his daughter, the minor became pregnant. He said the accused after coming to know that the girl was four months pregnant took her to hospital and with the help of some medical practitioner got her pregnancy aborted. The man said he came to know about the matter only after his family noticed abnormal behavior and dipping health of the victim. He later brought the matter into the notice of the police.
On the basis of the written complaint filed by the victim's father, Kishtwar police registered an FIR No. 79/2019, under Section 376 RPC and started investigation into the matter. The police launched a manhunt to arrest the accused who had gone into hiding following the registration of an FIR by the police.
The accused, according to sources, tried his best to pursue the victim's family for settlement of the case and even offered to marry the victim, but the family refused any compromise and decided to go ahead with their complaint with the police.
Meanwhile, the accused was arrested by the police party led by SHO Police Station Kishtwar under the supervision of Dy. SP HQ Kishtwar Aiyaz Ahmed Sheikh and Additional SP Kishtwar Nisar Ahmed Khan within 24 hours after the registration of the FIR.
Notably, a few weeks ago, several dead fetus were recovered from the district hospital Kishtwar premises following which Kishtwar police registered an FIR. But so far police has failed to provide any detail on the progress of the investigation into the case that shamed the district.
