LS Polls: Only miracle can help Mehbooba Mufti
'PDP chief fighting a lost battle'
4/30/2019 11:38:02 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 30: Just 10 percent voter turnout in four assembly constituencies of south Kashmir's Kulgam district in the second leg of three phased polls in Anantnag parliamentary constituency has reportedly sent alarm bells ringing within the Peoples Democratic Party camp.
Sources told Early Times that party workers have informed the PDP president and party's candidate, Mehbooba Mufti, that very low voting was recorded in the areas where people in large numbers used to vote for the PDP. "People not voting for the PDP in Kulgam district means that the PDP president is on a very weak wicket," sources added.
It's in place to mention here that in the first leg of polling in Anantnag district PDP had faced the similar situation as the polling percentage was higher in the areas where other parties are in a strong position.
An analyst said, "Mehbooba Mufti is facing an eminent defeat as the people have not voted in her favour in the first two phases of the parliamentary polls. The PDP is hoping that polling percentage in the last phase in Shopian and Pulwama districts may increase. Only miracle can help the PDP president. It looks like that nothing has gone in her favour in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections."
A Kashmir watcher said, "Since the day Mehbooba has lost power she has visited the families of militants and has tried to project herself as the biggest sympathizer of the terrorists and separatists in Kashmir. But it looks like that nothing has helped her cause and she is all set to lose the first election in her political career."
It may be recalled that all six assembly segments of Anantnag and Kulgam districts of southern Kashmir were represented by PDP in the last assembly elections.
The entire area has not witnessed much of poll activity this time around. The other two districts Pulwama and Shopian may not also record a high turnout as both these districts have witnessed large scale violence during the past few years.
An analyst said that all the areas where PDP could have gained have recorded dismal polling. "Pahalgam, Shangus, Dooru and Kokernag , Bijbehara and Anantnag which were considered to be the bastions of the PDP, did not witness much of the poll activity. Many people believe that PDP has already lost the battle and PDP president would have to do lot of face saving in coming days," he added.
