Social Media - Both aiding and adverse

Social media sites have influenced our life and the society in general. It has a contributing role in widening of the world we live in, and easy communication around the world has definitely made us closer to other parts of the world. We are living in a time where the world is open to us. We can contact anyone around the world, at any time, with just a few keystrokes. It is free, unlike calling across the ocean, and live. We can also share elements of our life, from what we enjoy to photos of ourselves and those in our lives. It is like being a part of that person's world, even though distance keeps us apart. Social media has made it possible for likeminded individuals to discuss important topics, widen their personal knowledge and discover things they never knew before. Young people around the world are now more involved than ever in their country's politics. Sites like Face book, Twitter, YouTube and others are a cost effective means of spreading the word and getting support. The increasing popularity of social sites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, social networks has gained attention as the most viable communication choice for the bloggers, article writers and content creators. Traditional marketing mediums such as the radio, TV commercials and print ads are almost obsolete and have removed all the communication and interaction barriers.
The important of social media in our life stand well realized by its users, yet, when asked to put into words, none of us could probably express how much it means. Social media is an opportunity to reach a massive number of people but approach should be with transparency, honesty and integrity. It should be used to impact the people rather than to impress them. Social media is the collective of online communication channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. The most important among them are the Facebook, a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and videos, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. Twitter is a free micro blogging service that allows registered members to broadcast short posts called tweets. Google+ is Google's social networking project, designed to replicate the way people interact offline more closely than is the case in other social networking services. Wikipedia is a free, open content online encyclopedia created through the collaborative efforts of a community of users known as Wikipedia's, anyone registered on the site can create an article for publication. LinkedIn is a social networking site designed specifically for the business community. Reddif is a social news website and forum where stories are socially created and promoted by site members. Pinterest is a social creation website for sharing and categorizing images found online. Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing site that enables its users to take pictures and share them either publicly or privately on the app, as well as through a variety of other social networking platforms. Tumblr is a micro blogging and social networking website, allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog. Flickr (pronounced "flicker") is an image hosting and video hosting website and web services suite. Among the most popular social sites, Facebook is a worldwide social networking site, frequently and commonly used from adolescent to geriatric fraternity irrespective of their sex to gather any sort of information.
But not all consequences of this technology are good ones. Like the way it has allowed us to hide behind screens and limited our social interaction face to face. We get the feeling of being social without having to go out and socialize and it is a deceptive socialization. We cannot ignore the facts that number of relationships that have been broken up over social networks. The misuse of Face book which is just a tool that has seemed to make it easier to cheat, or to do things that cross a boundary in your relationship. There is the sheer number of stupid, vain people on Face book. It gives us the feeling of being a friend (or having friends) without having to put in any actual work to build the relationship. Just think of how many people you have on your Face book friends list. How many of them do you see on a semi-regular basis? The social media has potential to create controversy, as it has negative effects also due to lack of censorship of various unsocial postings on social sites. Social media has its negative side, reaching harmful self-esteem problems for numerous people. The porno sites available on search engines are playing a great role in change of life style in our adolescent.
One of the negative effect of social media or network is it leads to addiction. Spending countless hours on the social sites can divert the focus and attention from a particular task. It lowers the motivational level of the people, especially of the teenagers and students. They mainly rely on technology and the internet instead of learning the practical knowledge and expertise of the everyday life. Kids can be greatly affected by these social networking sites if they are allowed to use them. The reason is that sometimes people share photos on social media that contains violence and sex, which can damage the behavior of kids and teenagers. It put the negative impact on overall society as these kids and teenagers involve themselves in crime related activities. Social media can be an addictive platform; we never get enough of using it, as we're constantly looking for better ways to enhance its features. We use social media in our personal lives, for our businesses, events, campaigns and various reasons. We often look at the positives of social media and shy away from the negatives. When we speak about the effects of social media, we should consider awareness of the following:
o It gives false sense of connection.
o The more time we spend interconnected via a myriad of devices, the less time we have left to develop true friendships in the real world.
o More people are building relationships online and drifting away from the real world.
o The more we post, comment and like, the more we feel closer to other people (whether or not we know them in person).
o Social media is encouraging people to become more public with their private lives, users are easily giving out information they could never reveal on a face-to-face conversation.
o A journey of a thousand sites begins with a single click and it can increase or decrease productivity.
o The user of social sites is influenced to change their way of thinking based on the majority rule - their online circle. This is a negative trait that disallows a person's own idea or implement of thought.
Concluding I think that the effects of social media somewhat have to be balanced, to be honest. There are many good things about it, and many bad things. In the end, if you can keep your own life centered in reality and use social networking as a small part of it, you should be just fine.
