Shah's maiden trip to J&K | | Omkar Dattatray | 6/28/2019 11:22:59 PM |
| The diehard Saffronite, close confident of PM Narendra Modi and now number two in the union cabinet Mr. Amit Shah is visiting J&K with a view to review the ground security situation ahead of Amarnath Yatra. The mere induction of Amit Shah as home minister in Modi 2.0 government is a signal to the anti nationals and militants that the central government means business meaning thereby that militancy are unacceptable and militants will be dealt with an iron hand. Now, Shah's maiden visit to J&K is a strong message to militants and Separatists that they will have to pay a heavy price for their involvement in terrorist activities. It has become clear from the high level meeting with governor S.P Mallik and senior military, police and civil officers that while militants will be dealt with a strong hand but at the same time the benefits of the central schemes should reach to the poorest of the poor in J&K and this is a welcome development as it shows the concern of the union government for the poor people of J&K. Not only this but Shah has also directed governor's administration to crack on the corrupt officers. Thus Shah is hard with militants but soft with the commoners and it is matter of great satisfaction. That moderate Hurriyat is willing to talk to the government is the result of central government's handling of the Kashmir situation and cracking on the separatists and Hurriyat leaders for their involvement in money laundering cases and fund raising for militants and this in fact has pressurized Hurriyat leaders for talks. This is a significant and positive development and should be welcomed. It is for the first time in last over 30 years that on the visit of Home Minister, separatists have not called for a bandh and this should be viewed as a good development and the central government should seize the opportunity and hold a purposeful dialogue with Hurriyat leaders to make a thaw in the strained relations between the government and separatists. The dialogue with the separatists within will later on pave a way for breaking the logjam in Indo- Pak relations. It is a settled fact that there is no alternative to dialogue process. Thus dialogue within and without is only a viable alternative to resolve the ticklish issue of Kashmir. Back to the main theme of Shah's visit, it should be noted that Amit shah reviewed internal security in J&K on his first visit as Home Minister. During the meeting Shah asked security forces to stay alert during Amarnath Yatra and called for timely dispatch of convoys. The high level meeting focused more on development and less on politics. The meeting focused on accelerating development and building infrastructure in the valley. Thus, the very first meeting of Shah with the governor S.P Mallik and other senior civil and military officers was more of developmental in nature as there was no talk of politics. To be more specific Amit Shah on his maiden visit to J&K as Home Minister reviewed security preparedness on Wednesday for Amarnath Yatra in a meeting with governor S.P Mallik and senior government and security officials. Shah also called for timely dispatch of convoys and barricades to be manned round the clock. The high level meeting dealt with accelerating development, building infrastructure, good governance, inclusive growth for all communities and employment generating schemes for youth. Shah asked the governor's administration to ensure that the poorest of the poor of J&K should get the benefits of good governance in all spheres. He instructed that all security points should be adequately covered to avoid any terrorist episode and it was said by Home Ministry in New Delhi. It was stressed in the meeting that all developmental projects in the state should be reviewed. Shah also instructed the ACB to investigate the corruption cases on a priority basis and fast track probes should be done wherever necessary. In fact, Amit Shah focused more on security than on political outreach. The thrust of Shah's visit clearly focused on security rather than any effort at political outreach. Home Minister chaired a meeting of top security officials in Srinagar to review the arrangements made for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. Governor S.P Mallik who is also the chairman of Amarnath Shrine Board also attended the meeting. Home minister was also briefed about foolproof arrangements and multi-tire security in place for the Amarnth Yatra. Shah took stock of the overall security situation, infrastructure on the line of control and anti militancy operations in a meeting of unified headquarters comprising top officials of all security wings today on Thursday. Shah also met BJP's top leadership in the valley. The families of BJP leaders who were killed by militants met Amit Shah and he announced ex-gratia relief in favor of the heirs of slain BJP leaders. The visit of Shah is important as it came against the backdrop of a fresh offer of talks made by Hurriyat Chairman Merwaiz Umar Farooq, an offer which was welcomed by governor Malik. The focus of Shah's visit was more on security than on political outreach. In fact, unlike farmer Unior Minister Rajnath Singh, Shah has not extended any invitation to mainstream political parties like NC and PDP. Signifying the importance given to J&K by PM Modi's government, union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday choose the state for his maiden trip after assuming mantle of home ministership and reviewed the security situation. Breaking away from protocol governor Malik accompanied by his advisors and some top officers of the state government received Shah at the Airport. Governor's in the past have normally only received the PM, while visiting the state. In the high level meeting that followed officials informed Shah about various steps taken to eliminate top militant leadership while ensuring that the militants are not able to carry out Pulwana like attack. At the first Home Minister was briefed about the overall security situation in the troubled state especially in the aftermath of Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were martyred. In nutshell Home Minister's maiden trip to J&K will have a positive bearing upon the security and economic sitatuion in the coming months. |
