Elections in J&K to be held in Nov | ET report of May 9 vindicated | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 28: An Early Times report of May 9 got vindicated on Friday when the Union Home Minister Amit Shah revealed that polls in Jammu and Kashmir are being held by the end of 2019. "The Election Commission has held talks with the Centre and all political parties and decided that it would be possible to hold elections at the end of this year," Shah said, adding that the elections were delayed due to Ramzan, the Amarnath Yatra, and security reasons. Early Times in its report titled 'Govt to hold JK's Assembly polls in November ' carried on May 9 had specifically stated that the much-awaited polls for the state assembly are being held by the end of this year due to security reasons. On January 3, then Home Minister Rajnath Singh had said the government is willing to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir along with general elections in May. After 1996, this is the first time the Central rule has been imposed in the militancy-hit state. Governor's rule was imposed in the state on June 19 last year when the BJP withdrew its support to the PDP and toppled the government. There were speculations that the two parties were trying hard to stitch the common ground together and form the government again. Also, there were reports that the rebel group led by the PDP leader Imran Ansari was preparing for a major coup and would form the government in the state. However, these speculations were put to rest by the Governor SP Malik when he dissolved the state legislative assembly amid political chaos. Now, with polls being held in the state as per this official announcement, chances are high that an interesting situation would emerge in state's political scenario. On one side is the PDP which is facing a major rebellion within its ranks and on the other side is the national conference that claims to be winning the polls with thumping majority. Also, People's Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone and a third front from former IAS officer Shah Faesal has made the situation lofty to keep an eye on. |
