Muneer Khan's extension; Shot in the arm for policing in restive Kashmir | Tiger Zinda Hai! | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 30: With the union government having given one year extension to Additional Director of Police Law and Order, Muneer Ahmed Khan, the development is being seen as shot in the arm of Jammu and Kashmir Police for tackling militancy in restive Kashmir. In an order issued by Mukesh Sawhney, Under Secretary at Ministry of Home Affairs, GoI, extension of services for one year has been granted Muneer Ahmed Khan IPS JK-1994, from the date of his superannuation that falls on June 30, 2019. Khan, who is popularly known in the police and defence forces as 'Tiger' is seen among the successful officers in tackling restive Kashmir, especially after the unrest of 2016. Seen among the experienced hands in tackling militancy from Kashmir to Doda region in the last 30 years, Khan was considered as the then PDP-BJP government's "trump card" in getting situation to normal. And the card of placing him as the IGP Kashmir had worked. It was during Muneer Khan's tenure as the IGP Kashmir that situation started to improve when the Valley was witnessing months of protests after the killing of Hizb commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani. Khan not only tackled militancy with iron hands but also bought civilian protests under control paving way for restoration of peace in the region. Reports reveal that during Khan's tenure as the IGP, the protests started getting localized till the same "fizzled out." "There was also a minimal use of force during his tenure," said a police official posted in south Kashmir. During his tenure as IGP Kashmir, it was found that many of the officers from Armed Police had been working as SHOs in various police stations and were allegedly posted on "political influence." Such postings were found a reason behind deteriorating situation in the valley that time. But unwilling to buy any "political pressures", Khan had reportedly transferred all such offers back to their Armed Police. To check preparedness of his cops, he would inspect police stations even in the late night hours. Top ten militant commanders of that time were killed during his stint as the IGP. Known for his direct contact with police officers at various levels as also with the "sources", Khan after his promotion as the ADGP had been manning Law and Order in Kashmir. With the incumbent IGP Kashmir likely to go on central deputation in the coming months, experts said police would need some experienced hands to tackle the situation in the restive Valley. "Now through the extension of his services, we have the man who can tackle the situation with all his experience," said a senior official in the Home department. |
