Assembly elections in J&K have been delayed by six months | | | Those political parties that were hoping to get the Assembly elections shortly have been befooled by the latest Government order in which the President's rule has been extended by another six months. The Centre had no option but to extend the President's rule for six months in Jammu and Kashmir as the Election Commission intends to hold assembly polls there towards the end of the year, Home Minister Amit Shah told Rajya Sabha as he moved a statutory resolution in this regard. The statutory resolution on extending President's rule by another six months with effect from July 3, 2019 was approved by Lok Sabha . "After assessing the current situation, including security and religious activities, the Election Commission has decided to hold election in Jammu and Kashmir towards the end of this year. The government did not have any option but to bring this resolution," Shah said in the Upper House. He hoped that the House will understand the circumstances and support the resolution. Though the opposition parties were opposed to the plan of extending the President's rule but the BJP led NDA Government adopted the resolution leaving politicians to go in hibernation for six months. With the opposition questioning the delay in holding assembly polls, Shah said assembly elections were never conducted in the past in the state during the month of Ramzan, which was from May 7 to June 4 this year. This means that the Assembly elections may be held either by January or in February. Since the month of January is quite cold in Kashmir with Chila Kalan at its zenith one would expect February to be the ideal period for the Assembly elections This means that the hopes of the National Conference to regain power shortly have been dashed to the ground. Hopes are that the National Conference may regain power after the month of February. The Election Commission of India has given credit to the BJP led NDA Government that the situation is not conducive for holding the Assembly elections. Reports said that the state unit of the BJP has been trying to convince the centre for delaying the elections so that the BJP may be ready by February for the elections. Since the BJP forged an alliance with the PDP and form the coalition Government people have lost faith in the BJP in the region of Jammu where the supporters of BJP are innumerable. The same is the story of the PDP in the Kashmir valley where majority of people have not supported the coalition with the Jammu centric BJP. This way the BJP is trying to regain its ground it had lost in Jammu region and this may take another six months. |
