Want Raj Bagh footbridge be made motorable, people appeal Guv
Local politicians conspire to make Govt waste millions
7/3/2019 10:26:40 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 3: Some leaders from regional parties including National Conference are trying to mislead the Raj Bhawan by saying that the footbridge constructed at Raj Bagh at the cost of around Rs 50 crores should be converted into motorable one.
Sources said some local politicians including one ousted leader of the Peoples Democratic Party have been sending delegations to the Raj Bhawan to convey that "the bridge be converted into motorable one in the interest of public."
Sources said the local politicians have "personal and vote bank interests" in the conversion of the said bridge but that the same would be detrimental for the safe flow of traffic.
Sources in the Roads and Building department said the conversion of the bridge would not only be threat to safe travel on the road but would be waste of around Rs 20 crores.
"This is waste of public money that a bridge that was made a footbridge in view of traffic safety norms would be converted into motorable one. Till how long will these politicians make loot of public money," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said the local politicians have been telling some civil society members to start a campaign seeking conversion of the bridge into motorable one.
"There are some interests of land and vote bank due to which some politicians are willing to even spend money to meet their interests," said a source close to the deliberations.
It is pertinent to mention that the previous Peoples Democratic Party led government had decided to make a footbride instead of motorable bridge following feedback that the morotable bridge was not feasible for the busy junction.
But now that the bridge is ready, the politicians are out to meet their "vested interests."Meanwhile people have appealed Governor SP Malik to look into the matter.
