Nai-Basti Bag-e-Bahu exposes Swatch Bharat Abhiyaan
Dug-up lanes, choked drains emanating foul smell

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jul 3: The much hyped cleanliness drive of union as well as state government under Swatch Bharat Abhiyaan, has been virtually dumped into dustbin at Nai-Basti Bag-e-Bahu area, as dug-up lanes and choked drains have made the life of residents miserable.
Local residents of Nai-Basti area Rattan Lal, Yashpual, Sunanda Devi, Savitri Devi, Romi Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Maya Devi, Rattan Lal, Anil Kumar, Ricky Kumar, Ramkali and Vidya Devi informed Early Times that the lanes of the locality were dug up months ago for laying of sewerage pipes. "After laying down sewerage pipes, they have not lifted the garbage and dumped it along the lanes. Moreover the drains have also been choked by the garbage, due to which the filthy water entered into our houses", the residents said.
They further added that foul smell emanated from the choked drains coupled with the breeding of mosquitoes. "Worms enter into our houses while as mosquitoes and other insects can trigger epidemic in the area", the residents said, adding that the water supply pipes were laid in the drains and the dirty water from drains makes its way into the supply pipes through leaks.
Rubbishing the Swatch Bharat Abhiyaan the residents rued that Union government has been making tall claims of cleanliness but in their locality the drive has failed. "During election time, politicians visited the area and now even corporator or the former legislator has not visited the area after winning the elections while our appeals have been falling on deaf ears", the residents said, adding that no sweepers were deputed in the locality by the administration.
"The government as well as administrative officials are bothered about the VIP colonies but we poor are no priority of anyone so we have been made to live in hell like situations", the residents said.
The residents further claimed that the erratic water supply in the area was another worry. "On each third day the Public Health Engineering department supply water to our locality and that too for few minutes. Most of residents are daily wage workers and for storage of water supply the women have to miss their daily wage", the residents said, adding that they were daily wage earners but without water, the life cycle stopped, so they had to remain their houses in wait of water supply.
The PHE should supply water on routine basis and that too at a particular time in the morning hours, so that the labourers would go for their work without any hindrance.
