| Authorities without answer on number of commercial hand pumps | | |  Ashwani Sharma

UDHAMPUR, Aug 25: An RTI activist is being shuttled between PHE and Mechanical Ground Water and Drilling Department as he is not able to get a reply to the information he is seeking for the number of commercial hand pumps installed in district Udhampur.
The RTI activist, Fateh Singh wanted to know the number of commercial hand pumps installed in the district through an RTI application as locals have complained that water in traditional springs has reduced due to increase in the number of commercial hand pumps which are being operated illegally.
While the PHE division Udhampur had no answer for the query, it shifted the same to the Mechanical Ground Water Division Jammu which again in turn returned the question to PHE Division Udhampur
Sources informed that corrupt practices were involved in running these hand pumps that is why the authorities concerned have no answers to this.
Sources further inform that several industries like cement and chemical used commercial hand pumps in Battal Ballian Industrial area resulting in receding of the water levels of nearby natural resources due to which the locals are facing shortage of water. |
