Police to use drones for protest surveillance | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Sept 1: In a significant development the Jammu and Kashmir Police are likely to use drones for the surveillance of protests and other anti-national activities in restive Kashmir. Sources said the police have already started trial versions of the use of drones for surveillance. It was reliably learnt that the drones have been tested in some areas of Srinagar in the first phase and would subsequently be used in other districts as well. Sources said the use of drones was likely to not only record the anti-national activities but also to prevent them by serving as a deterrent as the people will be more cautious of being watched by the drones from above in the skies. Sources said the drones are equipped with hi-resolution cameras and night vision devices that will capture pictures and videos of the people taking part in protests. A senior police official told Early Times that the drones will be used to keep track of such unlawful movements at strategic timings. The drones are understood to be equipped with night vision devices that will help police in keeping surveillance of the trouble prone areas. Sources said the drones will be monitored through a centralized control room in respective police stations where the video footage and other relevant details of the surveillance will be stored in a central database. "All such videos will be stored in a central database and the same information will be used for future references and to decide strategies on tackling of such situations," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity. Official said the drones can give specific details of the stone-pelters and other miscreants in a much better way than the routine cameras had been doing in such situations. Despite repeated attempts the concerned couldn't be contacted for comments. |
