Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 22: Serious differences have emerged in Congress over decision of some party leaders to openly oppose abrogation of Article 370. Some Jammu based leaders have reportedly asked high command as well as Kashmir based leaders against taking a tough stand against scrapping Article 370 due to emotions of the people of Jammu region.
Credible sources said that it was all due to tough stand taken by some Jammu based leaders that top leadership of the party including PCC chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir and others have maintained a guarded silence on Article 370. Reminding party leadership about party's complete debacle in the majority community areas of Jammu province in the recently held Lok Sabha elections, a group with in party has warned that party would be completely wiped out in Jammu region. Congress had contested five out of total six Lok Sabha elections but party failed to open its account. In two parliamentary constituencies of Jammu province National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had supported Congress candidates to avoid division of 'secular' votes. "It is all due to pro-secessionist approach of the top state leadership that party's base in majority community dominated area was completely eroded in the Parliament elections as people are equating Congress with NC and PDP", a top party leader said and warned that taking tough stand in favour of Article 370 would further erode party's position in Jammu region. Although Congress had failed to open its account in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, party candidate had secured respectable votes from majority community dominated assembly segments in the plains of Jammu region.
