Kashmir leaders, Delhi based 'left-liberals' forced Cong to boycott BDC polls
10/10/2019 12:41:21 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 9: Succumbing before the pressure of some Kashmir centric leaders, Congress today took U-turn and announced to boycott the Block Development Council (BDC) elections in Jammu and Kashmir, citing "indifferent" attitude of the state administration and continued detention of senior party leaders.
Interestingly Congress leaders claimed that most of their leaders were detained by the administration but PCC chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir, who was under house arrest some days, has himself announced boycott of elections.
As reported earlier, Congress was facing pressure from Kashmir centric ledership to boycott elections to remain in good humour of separatists and anti-national groups. Valley based leaders had raised strong objection over decision of Jammu based to participate in elections.
Sources said that some centre leaders, who have launched a vicious campaign against prevailing situation in the Valley, were also opposed to participating in democratic process in J&K.
Sources said that Jammu based leaders have argued that boycotting elections will send a wrong message across the nation but some Delhi based leaders, who are under the influence of Kashmir based leaders and left liberals, have forced state leadership to boycott elections which
will be held in Jammu and Kashmir on October 24. These will be the first elections to be held in the state since its special status was revoked under Article 370 on August 5.
Sources said that some Delhi based intellectuals, who are advisors of senior Congress leaders, suggested that participating in democratic process would give positive message across the world about prevailing situation in J&K so it was better to boycott elections to further demonize Union Government.
"The Congress believes in strengthening of democratic institutions and never shied away from any polls. But today, we are compelled to take a decision to boycott BDC polls due to indifferent attitude of the state administration and continued detention of senior party leaders in the valley," state Congress president G A Mir told reporters at Jammu.
