Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 6: The summer capital, Srinagar, world famous ski resort of Gulmarg and other parts of Kashmir valley received fresh snowfall on Monday, resulting in dip in the mercury during the day though night temperature improved.
Despite major improvement in the night temperature, Drass was the coldest place in the region at minus 12.9 degree followed by Leh, where the mercury settled at minus 10.4 degree.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI heavy snow would occur at isolated places while many places in the valley would witness light to moderate snow during the next 48 hours in Kashmir under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region.
Rooftops, trees and open fields were covered under a thin blanked of snow as people woke up to a chilly Monday morning in Srinagar, where the night temperature settled above normal. Against minus 1 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in Srinagar was minus 0.8 degree. Light intermittent snowfall continued throughout the morning in the summer capital, where people were wearing warm clothes, including jackets, to evade chilly weather conditions.
Drivers and mechanics were seen burning wood on roadsides to keep themselves warm.
Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, received over 4 inches of fresh snow, resulting in further dip in the day temperature. Kongdori and Apharwat, the highest point of the cable car project in Gulmarg, also received moderate to heavy snowfall.
The night temperature in the ski resort improved about 2.5 degree from Sunday and settled at minus 8 degree. "Despite snow since early this morning, the tourists are out on ski slopes, which are already covered under several feet of snow, enjoying different activities," a hotelier said over the phone.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, received very light snowfall in the wee hours on Monday, resulting in dip in the day temperature. But, the night temperature at the health resort improved and settled above normal on Monday due to overcast conditions. Against minus 9.4 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in Pahalgam was minus 3 degree.
The upper reaches in Pahalgam, including Chandanwari, received very light snowfall. Amarnath cave shine and its periphery, besides Sheshnag, Mahagung, Pisso top and Panjterni, also received light to moderate snowfall.
