Early times report

SRINAGAR, Jan 20: Leaders of Jammu & Kashmir unit of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) have made it a habit of deceiving common masses of the union territory especially those living in Jammu division, while making hoax claims and doing nothing on the ground.
More than five and half months have passed ever since Article 370 and Article 35A were abrogated from the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir. At the time of abrogation of these articles the leaders of BJP claimed that things would change for better for the people of Jammu saying that articles were roadblocks in the development.
Sources told Early Times that most of the BJP leaders at that time had said that delimitation would take place as soon as Jammu & Kashmir becomes a full-fledged union territory in the Union of India. They said that over the past two and half months no worthwhile progress has been made in this regard.
“Jammu & Kashmir became union territory on October 31, 2019 and it was expected that order for carrying out delimitation exercise would be issued soon, but that was not to be. The people of the union territory especially residents of Jammu are waiting for the issuance of such an order but the same has eluded them,” said sources.
Sources said that one of the important leaders of BJP looking after the party affairs in Jammu & Kashmir had claimed that a retired judge would be appointed as head of the committee that would look into the delimitation aspect of the union territory. They said that no judge whatsoever has been appointed so far with the claim proving to be a ‘hoax’.
“No one can deny this fact that the BJP leaders of Jammu & Kashmir are in disconnect mode with the central leadership, but still then they go on claiming. It is the high command of the party that takes the decision with respect to Jammu & Kashmir and on most of the occasions the local leaders are not kept in loop,” said sources.
Sources said that none of the BJP leaders of the union territory can claim success with regards to abrogation of articles giving special provisions to the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir. They said the decision was taken by the union government on its own and nobody from the state especially from BJP knew about the development.
“Despite getting huge mandate from the Jammu division in 2014 assembly election the BJP failed to live up to the expectations of the people. The landmark projects that were promised to be completed in Jammu division are languishing since the time BJP formed government with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in March 2015,” said sources.
Sources said that although the PDP-BJP government was in power for around three and half years no project whatsoever was completed. They said the BJP ministers in the cabinet claimed that these projects would be completed well within the set time frame but no such thing happened on the ground.
It would be in place to mention that strength of erstwhile assembly of Jammu & Kashmir state was 89 (87 elected members and two nominated members). Since Ladakh is a separate union territory without assembly the strength of Jammu & Kashmir assembly has now come down to 83.
“If the delimitation exercise is carried out then there are chances that Jammu division may get benefitted. Seven more seats may be added from the Jammu division and as such the total strength of assembly would be 90. As such 46 members would be elected from Kashmir and 44 from Jammu,” said sources.
