Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 23: Hundreds of Kashmiri migrant families san accomodation facilities due to failure of Government to construct quarters for them.
The Kashmiri Panditshounded out from Valley over 30 years back are leading an exiled life in Jammu and other places of country since then. Though Government constructed about 4000 Tarts for the accomodation of these migrants at Jagti, Nagrota, Buta Nagar, Muthi and Purkhoo yet about the same number is living in rented accomodations and some dilapidated quarters.
The Government after construction of Jagtitownship had promised to construct more quarters at Purkhoo camp by making addition and alteration to existing quarters.
According to sources the Relief organisation has submitted a proposal to Union Government in this regard over five years back and the proposal was also finalised in Apex Committee meeting chaired by then Chief Minister of the State Omar Abdullah. Though five years have passed since the assurance and decision taken in Apex Committee meet no headway was made in this regard till date, sources added.
Sources said the Central Government has not shown it's keenes in approving the proposal though in principle it too has agreed the same.
Sources said hundreds of migrant families totally dependent on cash doles are putting in rented accomodations for years together and due to hefty house rent they are unable to make their both ends meet.
Sources said though Government still claims that more quarters are to be constructed at Purkhoo to accomodate are deserving people, but these claims are confined to verbal assurances only as nothing in practicle has been done in this regard.
Some migrant families are in total distress as they are unable to feed themselves on a meagre cash assistance coupled with payment of huge house rent and few of their school going children every month.
Sources said about 100 migrant families are putting up at Old Purkhoo camp in dingy and dilapidated ORTs which are stinking. These quarters which are not even suitable for Cattle or horses the human forces compelled by destiny have been forced tio put up there.
Sources said over 30 migrant families mostly Government and retired employees are putting up in Nehru market quarters who are at verge of collapse and can collapse any time causing a huge human tragedy. But due to failure of Government to shift these
Migrants to alternate places their lives have been out to grave risk.
