I have no links with Jahangir Saroori: Congress leader

JAMMU, Feb 12: Senior Congress leader and former Minister Ghulam Mohammad Saroori a day after appearing before the National Investigation Agency (NIA), said that he is a secular leader and have no links with Jahangir Saroori, a militant active in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir.
“I was served notice by the NIA under section 60 wherein anybody can be questioned and I went to their office on Tuesday,” Saroori told reporters here on Wednesday morning at a press conference.
He said that he was not aware of the reason why he was called by the NIA and added, “I was surprised to see self created and false stories in media. I was asked by the NIA about my links with Mohammad Amin Bhat alias Jahangir Saroori, an old militant.”
Pertinent to mention here that the NIA summoned Saroori for alleged terror links in Kishtwar.
“Till 2014, 2015 Mohammad Amin Bhat alias Jahangir used to get all his documentation and his postal address by this name only,” he said and added, “after that who added surname “Saroori” to his name and he became “Jahangir Saroori” is not known to me and I have no links with him.”
“We used to live in Sarthal and shifted to Kishtwar when militancy was at its peak in 1992 but Jahangir was a native of village Saroor in Drabshalla which might have suffixed to his name as “Saroori” and his name changed.”
“Neither he is “Saroori”, which is my surname nor he is related to me,” said the Congress leader and added, “I have always condemned violence and riots of 2008 and 2014. We are nationalist people.”
“We are secular and have sacrificed our lives for the harmony and unity of the country and I don’t need any certificate of being secular from anyone,” said Saroori adding that he belongs to a secular political party and how “Jahangir Saroori” was linked to him and what is the conspiracy behind, must be enquired.
“NIA has served notice to around 300 people and that doesn’t means there is something fishy. They can call anybody for questioning,” said Saroori and added that he is ready to visit NIA whenever he will be asked to.
“I am a senior citizen and always stood for nation’s integrity,” he said and added, “but how he became “Jahangir Saroori” from “Mohammad Amin Bhat” is needed to be probed.”
