PDD shields erring officials over ‘criminal negligence’
Locals seek Murmu’s intervention into Sopore electrocution
3/20/2020 12:19:02 AM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Mar 19: The Power Development Department is allegedly shielding some of the concerned officials of the PDD whose “criminal negligence” led to the death of a truck driver recently in Sopore area of north Kashmir when a high tension line fell on his vehicle.
Official sources said under norms the concerned Executive Engineer, the Assistant Executive Engineer and the Junior Engineer were supposed to be placed under suspension with immediate effect but that they are being shielded by some top ranking officials.
Waheed Ahmad Lone, 35, the truck driver, who was resident of Zaloora village, was electrocuted when the high tension line fell on his vehicle. The incident left another person, Gulzar Ahmad, conductor of the truck, critically injured.
The bereaved family has since been demanding action against the power department authorities and rehabilitation of the family.
The bereaved family has been saying that it was “not an accident but criminal negligence on part of the power department which led to the tragedy” and that “authorities concerned should be brought to book.”
The locals said the high tension line in the area was hanging very low and as a result it hit the truck. “What if it was school bus passing by that area. The power development department has only become infamous for corruption,” the locals said.
The police have filed a case against the PDD vide FIR No 45 under section 22 for alleged negligence.
A senior police official told Early Times that the preliminary inquiry suggests that it was negligence on the part of the PDD.
But despite such a tragedy having struck an innocent family, the PDD is yet to initiate action against the accused officials nor any compensation is being paid towards the bereaved. “They are being shielded for some kind of deal otherwise all of them from XEn to JE were supposed to have been placed under attachment,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
When contacted a senior official in the PDD refuted that there was any “deal to shield the guilty.” He said the matter was being investigated and that “strict action would be taken against any of the officials whosoever is found negligent towards the duty.”
Meanwhile the locals have appealed Lieutenant Governor GC Murmu to personally look into the matter.
