SRINAGAR, May 16: The union territory of Jammu & Kashmir saw a tremendous spike in the Corona Virus cases as 108 persons tested positive for COVID-19 over the past 24 hours. The death toll due to the virus reached 12 today as a man of Budgam district died at Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura.
Ever since the Corona Virus cases were reported in Jammu & Kashmir it is for the first time that more than 100 cases were reported in a single day. While 35 of the fresh cases were reported on Friday night, the remaining came to the fore during the course of the day today.
Following the fresh cases the positive cases of COVID-19 reached 1121 in Jammu & Kashmir. The active cases are 567 in the union territory since there have been 542 recoveries so far while as 12 COVID-19 patients have died as well.
The 12th death occurred today as an elderly person from Buchroo-Chadoora in Budgam district passed away at SKIMS-Soura. The 72 years old man was working in his field on Friday and in the evening he suffered breathlessness following which he was shifted to hospital where he died. The covid-19 test report of the man suffering from asthma turned out to be positive after his death.
Out of 108 fresh cases Kulgam reported 47 cases followed by Anantnag 17 cases, Kupwara and Ramban 12 cases each, Kathua 10 cases, Budgam five cases, Srinagar three cases and Baramulla two cases. There are reports that fresh cases at least 12 expectant mothers and a six months old child.
The Jammu & Kashmir government through the media bulletin informed that 108 new positive cases of novel Corona Virus (COVID-19), 22 from Jammu division and 86 from Kashmir division, have been reported today thus taking the total number of positive cases in Jammu and Kashmir to 1121.
The bulletin said that one death has been reported from SKIMS, Soura whose sample tested positive for COVID-19. Out of 1121 positive cases, 567 are active positive, 542 have recovered and 12 have died. Moreover, 29 more COVID-19 patients have recovered and discharged from various hospitals, three from Jammu division and 26 from Kashmir division. It said that out of 76,191 test results available, 75,070 samples have tested as negative till May 16, 2020.
Additionally, till date 1,09,092 travelers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for surveillance which included 29,243 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 107 in hospital quarantine, 567 in hospital isolation and 14,114 under home surveillance. Besides, 65,049 persons have completed their surveillance period.
The bulletin said that Anantnag district has 162 positive cases, with 133 active positive, 28 recovered, one death; Srinagar has 156 positive cases with 68 active positive, 84 recovered, four deaths; Bandipora has 135 positive cases with nine active positive, 125 recovered, one death, Baramulla has 118 positive cases with 35 active positive, 80 recovered, three deaths and Kulgam has 119 positive cases, with 113 active positive and six recoveries.
“Shopian has 107 positive cases with 43 active positive, 64 recovered; Kupwara has 97 positive cases with 49 active positive, 48 recovered; Budgam has 57 positive cases, with 28 active positive, 28 recovered, one death; Ganderbal has 23 positive cases with nine active positive cases and 14 recoveries and Pulwama reported 15 positive cases with 10 active positive, five recovered,” said the bulletin.
The bulletin said that Jammu has 39 positive cases with 11 active positive cases, 27 recoveries and one death; Udhampur has 24 positive cases with four active positive cases, 19 recovered and one death; Samba has 11 positive cases with five active positive and six recoveries and Rajouri has five positive cases with one active positive case and four recovered.
“Kathua has 31 positive cases with 30 active positive and one recovered; Kishtwar had only one positive case who has recovered; Ramban has 18 positive cases with 17 active positive and one recovered while as Reasi has three positive cases with two active positive and one recovered,” said the bulletin.
As per the bulletin, the public has been informed that, people can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus; the disease spreads primarily from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth, which are expelled when a person with COVID-19 coughs, sneezes, or speaks. People can catch COVID-19 if they breathe in these droplets from a person infected with the virus. This is why it is important to stay at least 2 meter away from others.
These droplets can land on objects and surfaces around the person such as tables, door knobs, hand rails etc. People can become infected by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth. This is why it is important to wash your hands regularly with soap and water or clean with alcohol-based hand rub, reads the bulletin.
