Complacent leaders

The rout of Congress party in 2019 general elections in the country is making the BJP leaders in Jammu believe that people in this region have no other choice but to vote for the saffron party in assembly elections, whenever these are held in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir.
What has made them so complacent? It seems someone needs to tell them that in 2014 assembly elections it was the Modi wave which made them win 25 out of 37 seats in Jammu region. Many people who voted for BJP didn’t even knew the names of the local candidates, who were contesting on the BJP tickets. People voted for PM Modi.
The BJP leaders could enjoy the fruits of power in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time since 1947 due to the overwhelming support they got from people in Jammu. But in return these leaders couldn’t do much. These leaders shared power with PDP for nearly three and a half years but during that period they forgot the people who had voted for them.
The BJP leaders showing their true colours after coming into power disappointed the people of Jammu and they started exploring the options. During the past few years many options have come up in Jammu and these new faces are all set to give a tough fight to BJP in coming days. No one can stop local BJP leaders from dreaming that they are invincible.
The BJP leaders seem to have forgotten that Congress party shared power first with PDP and then with National Conference in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir for 12 years. The Congress leaders too had started believing the people of Jammu don’t have an option other than to vote for them.
This became one of the main reasons for the downfall of the Congress party. Today the party stands at crossroads and the big names and leaders associated with the party have become a history.
The BJP leaders should learn from the mistakes which were committed by the Congress leaders in the past. The saffron party leaders by indulging in publicity stunts on the name of helping the needy during the COVID-19 times are not helping their cause. This is making the belief of people more firm that they cannot think beyond vote bank politics.
