Early Times Report

UDHAMPUR, May 31: The residents of Udhampur are under a grave threat of falling prey to several waterborne diseases as contaminated water is being supplied to the town and its adjoining areas by the JAL Shakti department (formerly PHE).
A resident of village Phangial while showing a sample of the water he collected from the tap to the Early Times, said, “It is muddy water with suspended impurities in large quantities.”
Similar is the situation at other places here near the CEO office area, Nagrota, Dandiya etc.
With some houses in urban areas of Udhampur have installed water purifiers others are left at the mercy of God, means poor people who live in villages are prone to deadly water prone diseases as they cannot afford water filters, said another local.
Sources in the health department have warned that if such contaminated water supply remains there for some more time then there is a possibility of outbreak of some water borne diseases in the area.
“The public is not supposed to consume substandard water while they pay bills for the same,” said a resident, adding that the public has a right to get clean drinking water and if there is some fault in the delivering pipes or other reason the authorities should rectify it.
