Rajouri town grappling with garbage dumps

Early Times Report

RAJOURI, June 6: The casual approach of Municipal Council Rajouri can be gauged from the fact that entire town has been grappling with garbage dumps but authority concerned has failed to find a piece of land for its disposal as well as for constructing Solid Waste Management (SWM) plant due to which garbage is dumped in open.
Sources told Early Times that in absence of a proper place for dumping garbage which is generated from the entire Municipal Limit on a daily basis is dumped at New Bus Stand Salani, which presents a horrible look of the area and emanates foul smell.
District Rajouri has given many ministers in previous governments but nobody could solve the problems of disposal of garbage. Even Rs 4 Cr was sanctioned for setting up of a solid waste treatment plant but authority has failed to identify a piece of land in so many years, they added.
It is v shocking that Municipal Council Rajouri has no place for dumping garbage resulting in garbage vehicles unloading the garbage wherever they find place in open in violation of norms, which creates health issues. “Vehicles of MC Rajouri dump garbage riverside also, which creates pollution and the same is supplied for various purposes.
These piles of garbage can be seen all around the town,” locals alleged.
They further said that open piles of garbage have become breeding grounds for flies, mosquitoes, and insects and ultimately pose threat to the health of the residents nearby.
Municipal Council Chairman Arif Jatt, while talking to Early Times said that they had been trying to identify the land for garbage dumping but nobody comes forward to give land due to which authority has no option but to dump garbage in open. “Earlier garbage collected from Rajouri Municipal limit used to dump in Sunderbani area, which is 75 kms but after objection raised by the President MC Sunderbani, it was stopped,” he said.
