Punjab CM takes cognizance of Sukesh Khajuria’s complaint
Asks officials to look into spurious drug issue
7/26/2020 10:13:02 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, July 26: Taking cognizance of the complaint filed by a Jammu based social activist Sukesh C Khajuria regarding the death of a child and maiming of another due to spurious drugs in Punjab, the office of the Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh has ordered the concerned departments to not only look into the matter but also inform the complainant about the action taken at the earliest. Secretary to the Chief Minister has forwarded the complaint to the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) and other health authorities and told them to look into the matter and inform the complainant about any action taken on the complaint.
Khajuria in a letter written to Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh has attracted his attention towards the death of a child and maiming of another child due to administration of spurious drugs in Shambhu area of Patiala district.
Khajuria who had earlier highlighted the deaths of infants in Ramnagar area of Udhampur district of J&K in December 2019-January 2020 due to the same drug and taken up the issue of probe into death of children in JK’s Udhampur and compensation to the affected families with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Punjab chief minister to immediately intervene in the matter.
In his letter, Khajuria asked the Punjab Chief Minister that it was his constitutional duty to safeguard not only the lives of the citizens but also to provide them justice.
He urged the Chief Minister to ask Punjab’s Advocate General to forcefully plead for action against the accused in the High Court including cancellation of bail granted to some of the accused besides approaching appropriate forum for compensation to the victim families so that justice could be meted out.
Khajuria argued that if the Delhi government could give Rupees One Crore compensation and a government job to the kin of Ankit Sharma, an Intelligence Bureau staffer who was killed in recent Delhi riots, what stops the authorities to give compensation to the families of victims.
