Meaningful Silence
7/27/2020 12:20:20 AM

Senior Congress leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad skipping Article 370 and talking about restoration of J&K’s statehood during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi is a significant development. The Congress party apparently has realized that it committed a big blunder by not revoking the J&K’s special status during its rule. By remaining silent the party in a way has acknowledged the August 5 decision of BJP led NDA government and is not throwing tantrums anymore. As the first anniversary of revocation of Articles 370 and 35-A is coming near political parties have started demanding restoration of J&K’s statehood. When the Government of India had announced its decision to revoke J&K’s special status and had divided it into two union territories on August 5 last year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had assured the Parliament that J&K’s statehood will be restored as soon as the situation becomes normal. These parties are trying to drive home a point that normalcy has returned to J&K and GoI should fulfill its promise.
The political parties that used to swear by Article 370 have softened their stands and are waiting for the assembly elections to be held. But the common demand which is coming to fore is the restoration of J&K’s statehood. When the GoI had decided to do away with J&K’s special status Congress had vehemently opposed the move. Speculations were rife that when Azad met Farooq Abdullah after his release in Srinagar earlier this year, he had told senior Abdullah to come to New Delhi and attend the parliament session. Congress reportedly wanted Dr Farooq to corner the GoI for abrogating J&K’s special status.
But Dr Farooq did not respond and the matter was buried then and there only. The Congress party seems to have gauged the mood of the people in the country as no one opposed GoI’s August 5, 2019 decision. Most of the people were of the opinion that this decision should have been taken long back. Besides Congress party, Kashmir centric leaders too have realized that it’s no point flogging a dead horse. Now everyone wants to move ahead and become relevant. But for moving ahead these parties will have to wait till the delimitation exercise is completed.
The delimitation will end the injustice which Jammu region has been facing for the past 70-years. Political equation in J&K is all set to change as assembly seats in Jammu will increase from 37 to 44 and it will provide a golden opportunity to end the hegemony of Kashmir centric parties in J&K.
